My Thrifty Day

On Thursday Kelli came and watched the childcare kiddos and I ran to town for a doctor’s appointment.  It was a 6 month blood sugar test that got me to the doctor’s office.  It was no surprise, it went up slightly….not good for a diabetic but I readily admitted that I really didn’t think much about myself and eating over the last 6 months.  It wasn’t high enough to change my meds but I did get a warning that should it go up in 3 months, I’d likely need meds.  I was fine with that and completely understood.

From there is was to the vet and to the post office.  Between these places and the doctor’s office, there was a lot of condolences and hashing over what happened with Kramer.  It’s all okay and needs to be done, but after it all I was ready for a breather….So what does that mean??  If you know me, that means a thrift store run.  I had debated about just going home but I didn’t and I’m so glad I didn’t.

As I walked into the store the first thing that got me was this wonderful old mirror.  Sorry about the picture.  It’s laying in the seat of the truck.  It’s big, beveled glass and for $5 a steal.  I got a sold sign for it right away.

Then I found the desk chair…$5…and the buffet was $25.  I was so happy.  I had seen one at the same store a month ago and thought to buy it but it was $100.  this one is VERY similar to the other.  I have no idea on why the big fluctuation in price.  I’m thinking this might end up being my entertainment center.  Kramer wasn’t much for vintage farmhouse.  I am a little more inclined that way but not overboard.  I’m thinking this might get painted…I don’t know.  I couldn’t leave it there for $25 as I’m sure I can sell if for more than double that.

You’ll have to stay tuned with what I do with those pieces.

Then I found all of this too….

Totalled…everything was $58.  I think it was a good deal all things considered.  My blow dryer quit on me that very morning and I wrote on my list to pick up a new one at Wal-Mart.  I ended up getting this $3 one at the thrift store.  It was the same kind as my old one.  I was thrilled.

Ah-ha!  I even found fabric…See??Another piece to go with my calico collection.  This one is a yard and a half.  50 cents was the price on it.
These two things were fun.  The tin with the handle I thought I’d use for a cross stitch piece.   25 cents was the price on it.

The red basket I paid quite a bit for….it’s crocheted on the outside in my favorite red. It opens up really nice.

I got a box of Singer sewing feet.  I haven’t got a chance to go through them all…FUN!!

Two pair of shoes for Georgia!!  Both are super cute.

Another thing on my list was to get a new tote.  I use them in my water table for the kiddos.

It wasn’t a huge deal $3 for it.  But it was on my list as something I needed.    As soon as I got it home I put it in place on my stand.   I’ve loved this set up for water for the kids.  The stand is an old portable file folder stand.  If the bucket brakes I get a new one.  This time a thrifted one.

Being I found a hair dryer and a tote, I never did go to Wal-Mart…PERFECT!  That saved me time and money…Money because I didn’t pair near the price of new and I didn’t throw “something else” in my cart.

The trip to the thrift store was fabulous.  I’m so glad I went.  It was just what I needed.  Now, I have to wait for my furniture to come to see if I want that buffet in the living room…or if I want to paint it or what.  That furniture is a whole saga.  I’ll fill you in on that on another day, but rather than dwell on that, I’m celebrating a good thrift store day.

  1. You scored big at the thrift store. I bet the kiddos really love the water play. I sure wish I had a good thrift store near me. The thrift stores here are crazy expensive, but still fun to poke around in them.

Take care. Love, hugs and prayers coming your way.

  2. Great stuff at the thrift store. I love the buffet. Now I’ll have to keep my eye open for one. I’d use it as an entertainment center. I also love thrift stores and have gotten some neat items.

  3. I’m always amazed at the synchronicity of things…you broke your blow dryer that morning, and you find the exact same one! The tote for your water table! I find that if I arm myself with a list of items that I’d be happy to find at the thrift, I’m much more likely to find them, Love me some thrifting! You go, Jo!

That is a great piece of furniture! I sold furniture from catalogs for 30 years and I never let my clients go long without letting them know when and where their furniture was. Sounds like a call to the store manager is in order. But maybe you have done that. Once I sold a custom sofa to my sister and it got shipped to Miami instead of the Fl panhandle. Was upset about that one because its not like you can just drive to Miami and get it. I love your thrifting opportunities. My son introduced me to it recently and I’ve been to more thrift stores recently than I’ve ever been to.

I love the buffet and the unique water play setup! That is perfect for your kiddos! I have to ask – where was the truck when you took the picture? It sure looks like it was inside a house! LOL

Congrats on some great finds. It’s always fun to find good deals as well as good for the wallet.

  7. I love seeing your thrift finds! I still haven’t gone thrifting in awhile but I do try and make it to estate sales.

  8. I love the idea of using the buffet for a tv entertainment center, the height is perfect for that. I find the standard tv stands keep the tv to close to the floor so when you sit in a recliner and actually recline, now you have to watch threw your feet. Having the higher height of the buffet fixes that problem. I hope it works out and the price was perfect. Your water station for the kids to play in is a wonderful idea, I’m sure they enjoy it during the hot summer days.

  9. Great thrift finds! And I HAVE been wondering about your new furniture. Can’t believe you still don’t have it.

  10. Love the mirror and buffet. It’s so beautiful, I wouldn’t paint it. We never have furniture that gorgeous at our local thrift shops. The wire basket is really unique.
I lost my sister last Fall. It is exhausting to listen to people’s comments. The trip to the thrift store would be a treat!

  11. It looks like a great haul, that buffet is beautiful. The red crochet basket is very interesting, what are your plans for it?

  12. Great finds at the thrift store! My local thrift stores just don’t have great stuff like the ones where you shop!!! But yours are not convenient since I love in Virginia!!! I noticed a couple of new ones while I was running errands last week…will have to check them out to see if they are any better!! Fingers crossed!!!
I hope you are able to track down your new furniture….you ordered it some time ago! I know from personal experience that sometimes furniture orders do take a while, but they should have given you a pretty accurate estimate of when to expect your order. And, if there has been a delay, they should let you know that. Hopefully you will have it soon!

I am so glad you found such great items at the thrift store; you deserved that. The buffet is super cute, whatever you do to it.
When one is grieving, interacting with the well-meaning public can be exhausting. I just wanted to curl up in my bed under a big blanket.

  14. I really like the buffet and I would not paint it. It looks so nice the way it is. Save yourself some work. I’m not one to paint furniture and I also do the vintage look too. I get a lot of things from my boulevards, that people set out to take
I call it boulevard shopping . I have gotten so many nice things, my house is getting full. I’m not a hoarder, I call myself a collector. We don’t have any stores like your in my town, You get a lot of good things at your thrift store. Good Job
