I long promised you a free pattern. I finally got it done. You can find the pattern HERE.
This is the quilt that I wrote the pattern for…
It was very popular on the blog when I showed off my finished quilt.
I want to point out a few things to you. The quilt is made up of 16 patch blocks and star blocks. Look closely the inner star blocks have a light background. The outer stars have a dark background. I did that on purpose.
Although this is an “anything goes” type of quilt, I suggest focusing on a particular genre of fabric. Mine was made with mostly reproduction prints and fabrics that blended with them. My background fabrics ranged from light to tan.
If you look at the picture below, you can see that some blocks have two fabrics…some have three. Sometimes the star points matched the center. Sometimes there were two different colors making up the star.
When I cut it the star blocks out, I used my 3 1/2″ strip bucket and cut many centers…I used my 2″ strip bucket and cut the pieces for the background. Then cut pieces for the star points. I would put together a star set with the pieces I had cut. A few of the stars were cut from fat quarters too.
I know many of you might be tempted to ask lots of questions like How do I adapt this to king-sized or how do I adapt it to 2 1/2″ strips. Sadly, you’re on your own. I made the quilt the size I made it because that is what accommodated me and my scraps. If you need something else, you’ll have to do the math. It’s the nature of a free pattern.

Thank you for this. It’s still one of my favorite of your quilts. I love revisiting the pictures of it. I remember when it was shortlisted as a possibility for your new bed. Now that you are thinking about redecorating the bedroom, I’m curious to know what quilt will get the place of honor.

This is just what I needed! Thank you also for the guidance on choosing fabrics. I have an overflowing 3 1/2” box and an overflowing 2” box……so I am going with your sizes too. I am ready for some easy sewing. If I can resist the urge to cut into yardage and just use the strips already cut, then my boxes can start to empty. But, I am telling you, that yardage is calling my name (which is probably why I bought it?). I have been laboriously repairing a friend’s beloved childhood quilt that had gaping holes in it as well as worn fabrics. Sigh. Trying to overlook the store tag on it. Many, many thanks for the pattern for that gorgeous quilt! You do such a great job in writing your patterns, I’m going to LOVE making this quilt. I’m working on several at once – I have 11 quilt tops put together: 1 baby, 2 child, 4 teens or young adults (those are twin or slightly larger, one king & 3 sofa/cuddle quilts. There are 3 more that I have the quilt blocks ready to be laid out & sewn together (with & without sashing). It would be way too much fun to put together a 16-patch star and I’d use up 2″ strips and blocks, which are overflowing the containers. I think I’ve talked myself into that FIRST. Thanks for all you do for us and including us in parts of your life — so, so glad you are happy & enjoying your life!
