Moda Bake Shop: Candy Wishes

As many of you know, Kelli and I did a lot of quilts for Moda Bake Shop several years ago.  Some of the things you likely don’t know is that Moda Bake Shop isn’t ran quite the way it used to run.  The site has been reworked and can now be found through www.modafabrics.com.  Well through all of this, Kelli and I have been overwhelmed by questions from interested parties wanting the patterns for specific quilts as some of the patterns have been “lost in the archives”.  Well, to be honest, we are wanting to avoid all those emails and requests so we are going to be featuring one of our old Moda Bake Shop quilt or projects each week until all of them are posted here on our blog so we can readily find them and have access to them whenever we wantThese quilts will be archived here on the blog in the free patterns section on the right column.

This is made with 2 Moda Candy Packs.  I know many of you have them.  If you don’t have them, this quilt is a great way to use up bit of a fabric line leftovers.  Most of us have a few bits leftover from a jelly roll project, why not sew them up into this…

Here’s what you need:

2 Moda Candy packs (42 squares in each pack)
4 yards background fabric
1 yard inner border and binding fabric
5 yards backing fabric

CUTTING
From the background/outer border fabric:
Cut two 54 1/2″ long pieces from the length of the fabric. Subcut 9 pieces measuring 6½” x 54½”
Cut 9 strips measuring 2½”  x WOF. Subcut into 56 pieces measuring 2½” x 6½”
Cut 7 strips measuring 3½” x WOF for the outer border

From the inner border fabric:
Cut 7 strips measuring 1½” x WOF

From the binding fabric:
Cut 7 strips measuring 2½” x WOF

CONSTRUCTION
Select 48 of the bright squares from the candy packs. I opted to not use the ones with a light background. Combine 6 candy squares with 7 pieces of 2½” x 6½” background fabric shown. Make 8 of these strips.

Sew the 8 candy strip sets to 9 strips of 6½” x 54½” background fabric as shown.

Sew the inner border strips together end-to-end. Measure the sides of your quilt top and cut 2 strips. Pin carefully and sew to left and right sides of the quilt top. Press. Measure the top/bottom of the quilt top and cut 2 strips. Pin carefully and sew a strip each to the top and bottom.

Repeat the above process with the 7 strips measuring 3½” x WOF for the outer border.

Piece the backing together. Sandwich the top, batting, and backing. Quilt as desired.

If you want to see what I did for a quilting motif, come of over to my blog and check it out. Bind with the 2½” red binding strips.

I am not understanding this cut. Do I cut a 6 1/2″ strip the whole 4 yard length?

Cut two wof x 54.5″ pieces from the 4 yards of background fabric. Then cut a total of 9 strips that measure 6 1/2 ” wide–parallel to the salvage. It needs to be cut this way so that there will be no seams between the pieces rows.

What size is a candy pack? If in your directions, sorry I missed it. I am asking because if using scraps, do not know what size to cut. Otherwise, instructions are great. (I know I can find this elsewhere, but think it would be helpful if part of instructions.) Thank you
