Moda Bake Shop: Cheddar and Blue

As many of you know, Kelli and I did a lot of quilts for Moda Bake Shop several years ago.  Some of the things you likely don’t know is that Moda Bake Shop isn’t ran quite the way it used to run.  The site has been reworked and can now be found through www.modafabrics.com.  Well through all of this, Kelli and I have been overwhelmed by questions from interested parties wanting the patterns for specific quilts as some of the patterns have been “lost in the archives”.  Well, to be honest, we are wanting to avoid all those emails and requests so we are going to be featuring one of our old Moda Bake Shop quilts or projects each week until all of them are posted here on our blog so we can readily find them and have access to them whenever we want.  These quilts will be archived here on the blog in the free patterns section on the right column.

Jelly Roll of Morris and Company
3 3/4 yards Gold Redwood 8213 18 Moda #1
6 yards Kelmscott Blue 8217 17 Moda #1
8 yards backing Hammersmith Tea 8217 13 Moda #1

~From Jelly Roll, set aside the gold and blue strips. Cut 440 2.5″ squares from the remaining strips.

~From Gold cut 32 – 2 7/8″ strips. Subcut into 440 – 2 7/8″ squares. Cut them on the diagonal to create 880 triangles.

Cut 9- 2″ strips for narrow border

~From the Blue cut 28 – 4 7/8″ strips. Subcut into 220 4 7/8″ squares. Cut squares on the diagonal to create 440 triangles.

Cut 10 3.5″ strips for outer border.
Cut 10 2.5″ binding strips.

Here is the unit we will be making…

To make the above section of the block, take one of the 2 1/2″ squares. Attach a gold triangle to it. Press the square.

Attach another gold triangle to the block. Press to the gold. Then attach a blue triangle to created triangle. Press to blue.

Create four blocks.

Sew them together to make one large block. Create 100 blocks.

Using 25 of the blocks, sew the blocks into a 5 x 5 setting like this…

Repeat to make a total of four.

Sew those four pieces into this.

Following the initial block construction directions, create 40 more of these blocks.

Sew them into two sets of these.

Sew those rows to the top and bottom of the quilt.

Sew the gold inner border strips together. Sew them onto the quilt.

Sew the blue outer border strips together. Sew them onto the quilt.

Your quilt top should look like this.

Piece together the backing. Layer it with the batting and quilt top. Machine quilt as desired. Bind with the blue binding strips.

I’ve loved revisiting some of these previous Moda Bake Shop quilts that Kelli and I have done.  I get to see pictures of my previous beagle dogs.  This one has Gracie…my first beagle.  She was a rescue dog and boy we sure loved her.

I like this color combination. Wouldn’t it be faster to see the blocks to be made into triangles then cut them? Fiddly bits get me down unless I can simplify them.

  2. I always recognize Gracie! She’s what initially drew me to your blog all those years ago! As you know, we are beagle people too. We are celebrating 3 years today that our son adopted his beagle. Cappy was 11 when Jeff adopted him!

I totally admire yours and Kelly’s creativities. I like, but just reading all the amount of pieces, gives me a headache. Say hi to Rosie, I started to follow you because of Ruby. Have a blessed day, Felicia
