Wool Applique: Home

I was working on finishing things in my sewing room…I did two wool appliques one day. I told you about one; now I’m going to tell you about the other one I finished. I am embarrassed to say it has been over 8 years since I started this…likely even longer.

I know I bought the pattern at a quilt shop in Lacrosse, WI. At the time I was doctoring for my cancer in Lacrosse and had stopped there as a “treat myself” moment. I loved the Home pattern. The same pattern has outlines for all of the states, so it’s easy to personalize. The pattern is from Lisa Bongaen from Primitive Gatherings.

I invited people to come sew one day. It was my daughter Kelli, my friend Connie, and my niece Jody. I can’t remember if Kayla was there. If she was, she was sitting down with Jody. Anyway, as a retreat gift, I made them all a kit to make a pillow for themselves. I cut them out and attached the letters. Jody has been gone for seven years. At the time she came, I think she was in between rounds two and three of breast cancer. That’s why I’m guessing it was about that long ago.

Anyway…I finally stitched mine when I was on my umteenth round of cancer, when I was getting radiation on my hip earlier this year. It was long overdue time for me to finish it.

I started by putting interfacing on the backing piece and the stitched piece.

Then I put the two piece right sides together and sewed around the edge leaving an opening.

I rounded the corner when I stitched as I knew I was putting cording around the outer edge. I clipped the corners and turned it right side out.

Then it was stuffing time. I used only poly-fil on this. Then I ladder stitched it closed.

I have some cording that I bought at the thrift store some time back for only 25 cents. I sure wish I had more in other usable colors. I sew all my trim down in case I end up not liking it and can remove it.

Here is how I dealt with bringing the cording together. I love this option. I think it’s cute.

Here it is all finished. Whew. Finally done.

Of course I am kicking myself for not finishing it sooner.

I doubt Jody got to finish hers before she passed. I’m sure Kelli didn’t, as she would have had me finish it. HA!! I’m not sure about Connie. I’ll have to ask next time I see her.

Wool applique is a fun little project to gift and make kits for if you need something like that for retreats.

I know “HOME” projects were a big thing sometime back. Happily for me, this will never go out of style.

  1. A really cute pattern and finish. I’ve never done wool applique before but I might give it a try with this pattern.
    Love and prayers

I love your finish! I get to go to the Woolen Needle tomorrow. I’m taking a class, it’s always a great place to visit.
