Wool Applique Finish: Daisy and Ladybug

Way back in March, when I was having radiation treatments in Iowa City, I stayed overnight at the hotel so I didn’t have to drive back and forth. I had brought both cross stitch and wool applique projects to work on. I was tired after treatment, and concentrating on cross stitch in hotel lighting was not working, so I switched to wool applique. I finished the stitching on several projects.

The stitched pieces have just sat, and I haven’t gotten them finished. In an effort to get my sewing room cleaned up, I grabbed one of them and finished it.

It sure would have been smart of me to finish this earlier so I could have enjoyed it all summer, but I didn’t. It will be ready for next summer.

The pattern for this comes from the book Summer Gatherings. It is by Lisa Bongean and Carole Charles. I bought this years and years ago but have always kept it as the designs in the book are all awesome…but better yet, they are timeless.

I have done another design from this book and plan to work on others as well.

I did a bad thing when I prepped this and didn’t realize it until I had the stitching done and was admiring it. I cut it out on the traced line…and that was supposed to be the stitching line. I could salvage this, but I’d have to be careful to sew with the smallest seam possible.

I picked out a backing fabric and put interfacing on the back side of the wool stitched piece and the backing fabric.

With right sides together, I sewed around the piece using a tiny seam and leaving an opening for turning it right side out. Often when I finish cross stitch pieces I use crushed walnut shells and poly-fil. For wool applique, I typically use only poly-fil. I know someone is going to ask why…I like the feel better. With wool applique the wool hides inconsistency in stuffing. Everything just looks and feels better with poly-fil. If I am making a pincushion with the piece, then I use sand. I’ve heard crushed walnuts dull needles.

After it was stuffed I used a ladder stitch to sew the opening shut.

Here it is all finished. I made the small seam allowance work. Granted I wish there would have been more fabric, but at least it was doable.

I’m happy to have this one done. My sewing room is cleaner…I have another finished piece. What could be better??

  1. Sweet! I watch a floss tube called Jenn the Caffeinated Crafter. She’s down to earth, a game player and alot of her pieces are full coverage. I’m not much of a game player but I started to participate in her “Finish The S..t” suggestion. And by george, I just completed my second piece in a month! And for me, that’s a win! Age old question….why when we are so close to a finish do we put it aside and squirrel on something else? Happy Stitching!

  2. That’s a really sweet piece! I love daisies anyhow but this one is especially cute! Now it’s ready to pull out next summer and it will be brand new.

  3. Such a great finish. The daisy is so pretty and of course your stitching looks wonderful. So glad you were able to have a tiny seam to make it work.
