Have you seen the latest issue of Quilts and More? We have a project in the magazine so if you haven’t grabbed an issue, you might want to. This is the Summer 2020 issue.
As always, there are lots of other fun projects in the magazine. I do like Quilts and More as there is a variety of projects from bags to pincushions to quilts. For those of you who don’t know, Quilts and More is a Meredith Publication as is American Patchwork and Quilting another awesome magazine we work with.
Here is our project….
I know you all like the back stories on projects and this little table runner has one.
Back about Halloween time or so of last year I sent in a couple designs Kelli and I had done several years ago to American Patchwork and Quilting. We figured they were working on Spring issues so dug through the files of quilts I’ve designed and sent them this….
With the rainbow theme, we thought is would be perfect for a spring issue. It’s not a hard looking quilt either.
Well we never heard back from them so decided that must be a no. We were kind of sad as we really wanted to make the quilt. It’s a fun design.
Well fast forward to Christmas. We got an email and it said something like this- we want your quilt design only a table topper size and it needs to be patriotic. WHAT?
First off we didn’t know what quilt design and didn’t know quite how that would look. The there was a lot of back and forth emails.  We drew a picture of is as a square….they emailed back and said-how about a table runner design instead?
It was a big scramble as they gave us a deadline date of only 14 days in advance. I was working full time childcare and Kelli was working too. Then we couldn’t get the fabric in time from Moda as it was over Christmas break and warehouse was closed. We had put the request in but it wasn’t coming. I ended up at the quilt shop. They asked for it to be in Moda’s Grunge fabric…so I was hunting. From the selection at the quilt shop, I couldn’t get the right tones in Grunge that went together. The blue was too bright or the red was too tomatoey. I ended up finding the right combo in the Grunge Dot so I bought it as there wasn’t time to send emails and consult as the deadline was drawing near.
Kelli came over one evening and cut the topper out. I sewed the entire thing the next day and packaged it up so it could go in the next day’s mail.
We made the deadline but it was by the skin of our teeth. I know this sounds crazy, but I never really even got a chance to look at the finished project. The second it was finished, I wrapped it up to mail.
This story is the reality of working with publishers. It’s fun and we really enjoy it but sometimes, a lot of scrambling is being done behind the scenes.
So seeing it now what do I think? I like it but I still think I’d like it better in the rainbow version and in quilt size. I just might have to put that on my to-do list. I still think that would be a fun project.
We love working with Quilts and More and American Patchwork and Quilting. Both magazines have been so good to us.  So if you make it the stores, check out our project in the Summer 2020 edition of Quilts and More.
Congrats on another published pattern, Jo! I think your are right about a BIG rainbow version. That will be SEW super cute!!
That is such a cute table runner. Nice design and what a scramble to get it done!
Love the table runner!
Hi Jo. This is a really fun looking design. I like how the blocks seem to move off the bottom.
Love this runner! So classic!
It’s cute! When I saw the rainbow version, I immediately thought that I be5 it would work in a Red White and blue!!
Love the table runner and the back story but the bed quilt would be really fun to make!
Love your versatile pattern/design! Both quilts are beautiful & so inspiring in their own unique colors! Looking forward to seeing a large rainbow!
A really cute runner – and I love the quilt itself!
Love and prayers
Love this! Great work getting it done!
I ordered the magazine as it is one of favorite along with the American Quilt Magazine because my JoAnns just reopened.Ordered from AQM. I like the table runner. Happy Creating.
I’m still working full time and don’t have time to make a whole quilt. I start, but get discouraged when I can’t ever get it finished. Table runners or small wall hangings are a great thing for me to get that joy from a finished project. I would love to make your table runner!
Neat design–like the table runner a lot–but the rainbow combo is nice if you need a bed size. You are so right about Meredith Corp being a great organization to work with!!
Its a great table runner and yes I also like the rainbow version. I occasionally do buy this magazine because it has such a good variety of projects. I will look for this issue. Congratulations to you both on being published
My sister bought me this magazine for my birthday, and your name just jumped right out at me. Love this patriotic version, but the other would be really cute too!
Great table topper and interesting story.
