What I’m Working On: March 2nd, 2026

I wasn’t in the sewing room much this week. I had a lot going on…Anders was here an extra day and I had company from Wednesday through Saturday evening. Happily some sewing happened when I had company. Let me tell you about it all.

I told you earlier in the week that I was making plans to sneak in a spider web string quilt. It’s destined to be a gift for my great-nephew when he gets married in May. I asked Kelli if she wanted to help with it, and then we could give a joint gift. Kelli was totally on board.

We are making a variation of this…

Kelli was coming and staying overnight over the weekend, so I was determined to have everything ready for her arrival. I prepped all the paper and then started rummaging through the big bag of patriotic prints that Doreen gave me. There were quilt sections like this in the bag.

I ended up cutting them out like this so they could be used in the blocks.

Before Kelli came I sewed on a few blocks.

String quilts are SO messy. BUT, the mess is totally worth it!! I got enough triangles pieced to see what the blocks are going to look like.

I’m liking this!!

I managed to squeeze in a few Twirl Around blocks in between the Patriotic Spider Web quilt.

But then my daughters, Kelli and Kayla, came. It was time for the BIG PUSH on the Patriotic Spider Web quilt.

I took up residence at the machine. Kayla knitted…and Kelli slept. She had worked the overnight shift.

Once Kelli woke up, it was full speed ahead. She did some math to figure out how we planned on changing the quilt.

Kayla became the ironer.

We had quite the set up going.

We ended up getting all the strings pieced. I still have a full pile of papers to pull off. Kelli started sewing blocks together…and then our time ended. They left me in a really good spot. I can finish it on my own, or Kelli said she’d help me finish it on a different day. Either way, we are in striking distance and in a good spot to be able to finish it in time for the wedding.

I ended up working on it Sunday morning.

A couple of weeks ago I said I was interested in making this cat quilt for my grandson Gannon.

Ila messaged me after I said something. She said she had cat fabric that would work great for a backing. She wanted to send it to me. I said YES!!

Isn’t it cute? Well, in true Ila style, she couldn’t let anything travel alone. She sent some other fabric too. All are fabulous and enough for backing or on the top of the quilt with all the same background fabric.

You can imagine how loud I squeal when I saw she also sent a wonderful stack of reds/pinks. All are half-yard cuts.

Oh my goodness. I love it. Thanks so much Ila. You are so sweet to me.

I’m not sure what I’ll be working on this week. I’m hoping to get some longarm time in. I have a few quilt tops that need to be longarmed, and typically, I like to keep the longarm working.

I’ll tell you more about my weekend in an upcoming blog post.

  1. Having help with sewing is such a joy, but someone to man the pressing station is sheer luxury! Quilting is a real gestalt, a social effort that draws our work together and creates more than the sum of our forces.

  2. You got a really good start on your spider web strings! You had a great week last week so getting a bit less done in the sewing room is reasonable. Nice work! Having someone to sew with makes it like play time!

  3. I like your patriotic strip units. I am looking forward to see how you set them. Oh so fun to work with Kelli and Kayla. I love the red/pink fabrics from Ila and half yard pieces is awesome!

Your friend Ila sounds like the kind of friend everyone needs……she also sounds like she must have a whole room just filled with fabric.

  5. The Patriotic spider web looks amazing!! You have great creativity. Your girls helping is such a blessing :)
    Have a fabulous day!!

I love the patriotic spider web blocks! I made mine with lime green kites and bright/random strings. One of my favorite quilt patterns!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  7. I started a spider web quilt years and years ago. The kites are a blue and white toile and the strings are Christmas fabrics. You are inspiring me to get it out and finish it up.
