What I’m Working On: July 20th, 2026

We had a busy week. We had grandkids two days last week. I had doctor appointments on two different days (I’ll tell you about that soon). I was also gone all of Saturday at the cross stitch retreat. Besides that, we are still working on the garage sale. There wasn’t much time to sew.

On top of all of that, it was very hot here all of last week. The sewing room was hot. I have central air conditioning in the house, but my sewing room is the last on the line, and it’s always hot in the summer and cold in the winter. On days like we had last week, I avoid the sewing room if I can. Even with a fan going, it’s hot.

On Sunday, the temps cooled. I thought I might run up there and sew for a bit… But it was still really hot and stuffy up there. I ended up grabbing some things for a project I’ve been wanting to start. I needed this book…

These fabrics…

This page…I might change it a bit, but this is the block I want to make. I have no idea when I’ll get it done. I just know it’s on my list, and it was cooler cutting this out in the kitchen than it was up in the sewing room. HA!!

I ended up getting a few blocks but out. Well, all except the neutral I’ll be using for the background. It’s a white-on-white print.

Like I said. I have no idea when I will get to this project. It doesn’t really matter when. What’s one more UFO when I already have so many?

We are supposed to get storms this afternoon, and then a cool front comes in. Hopefully, what they say is true, and we would all appreciate some cooler weather. I would appreciate getting back into the sewing room.

  1. This is going to be fantastic. Thankfully there are no UFO police and we as adults can do whatever we want creatively. Start it, never finish….whatever makes the creator happy. This is about the journey as much as the sometimes finished products. My great grandmother left blocks behind, so may I.

  2. UFOs? I checked my LIST for the past year. I only finished 3 on that LIST. But I completed 5 other projects–and 3 of them are king size. I have 10 grandchildren and now they each have a quilted something!
My list for next year has 9 projects already started and an additional 8 projects that I have all the fabric and the pattern. I’m shooting to finish half of that!

  3. Same on the hot sewing room! Every year I was getting chased out out my space by the heat, but no more! I decided to get over the look of it from outside and bought a small window air for less than $200 at Walmart. It’s going great! I set it to the same temp as the central air, so I figure its kind of helping that out. It’s small enough to slide into a closet when not needed. There are some extras you can get to seal things up and foam pieces to cover the accordion slides on the side. Laugh if you want people, I’ll be in my sewing room! :-)

  4. The butterfly quilt will be adorable and I would think colorful and a good way to use scraps. Have fun making it. I’ll be anxious to see the first blocks.

  5. My sewing room is on the second floor and we don’t have zone AC/Heat. In the summer time it gets hot. I have a stand alone air conditioner that vents out the window. Keeps the room cool. My husband will holler from the main level, and I don’t hear a thing. It’s convenient in 2 ways.

  6. After my finished basement where my sewing room is flooded in 2019 and all the sheet rock and paneling had to be replaced, I had extra insulation installed before the new material was put up since the temperature in the basement was never as comfortable as the upstairs. Now, the basement is the coldest part of the house in the summer and the hottest in the winter. Who knew it would go like this?

  7. Does Rick know your sewing room is uncomfortable? He seems like the sort of fellow who might come up with a clever solution if he knew you wanted to work in there but couldn’t.
