The sewing room wasn’t my place of choice this week…Well, I take that back. I always choose the sewing room, but sometimes life has other plans. That was this week. I took a friend to her doctor appointments that were on Thursday, but she wanted to go down on Wednesday. We ended up shooting most of both days. So no sewing then. Rick is getting care set up with the VA. That killed much of Friday. The kids were home Saturday and Sunday, so no sewing then either.
You’ll likely hear much about that in the upcoming blog posts…on to sewing.
I dug through the backing shelf and found this pretty cheddar. I think it will work perfectly.

I also worked on my Old World Fantasy mystery UFO. This is one a blog reader started and gifted to me. These are the second set of blocks I need to make. They still need to be snowballed on the corners. From what I can see of the UFO pieces, no squares are cut to sew onto the corners. I don’t know if there is enough fabric so I’m waiting on that. I might end up changing the design if there is not enough fabric.

I went on and made some of the cornerstone blocks. Again, they need to be snowballed on the corners, but again, I might leave that.

Right now I am sewing everything together that I know goes together. After I’ve used up all the pieces, then I’ll make design decisions. All I know is that I am going to try to avoid buying fabric to finish it.
I am hoping this week I’ll get time in the sewing room. As of writing this, I don’t see a lot of obstacles to prevent me from the sewing room. So fingers crossed I’ll get something loaded on the long arm and get some more sewing done on this mystery quilt.
What are you busy working on??

I’m trying to make a baby quilt for my niece. Ugh! I bought a kit and then realized that I liked the panel, but I didn’t like the border fabric. I looked thru my stash and couldn’t find anything that would really work. So, I figured I’d have to use the fabric that came with it. I’ll end up making 4 patches to border the panel. It breaks up the border fabric into smaller pieces and looks better. At least it looks better to me.
Clever kit-bashing!
Thanks! I think it’s going to look great. And I’ve learned a new quilting term, “kit-bashing”. LOL
It’s always count Red Cross stitching. I prefer Aida cloth because at this ripe old age if 84, I’m not going to learn how to stitch on anything else.
Aida is beautiful too!!
I finished four trick or treat bags for my grand kids who still do the run on Halloween. I’m also repairing my dd’s quilt that the washer got a hold of. :-( And finishing up on Christmas ornaments for family.
A hint about the VA. It’s fairly easy to get into the VA for medical. However, watch the costs. Unless he has a disability of any kind, he’ll have to pay out of pocket for doctor visits, meds, and specialty visits. I found that out myself. Medicare is a problem with that too. :-(
If he doesn’t have any disability, he can file for it – tinnitus is a big one – plus hearing loss. That will take some time – this IS the government after all. ;-)
Love and prayers
Donna is right about the VA issues. It’s a big deal to evaluate what is creating problems for him right now — and file at the VA for it. Our nephew did that & he receives a much larger monthly check for all the damage inflicted while he served – he deserves every penny!
A lot of that damage doesn’t show up till later in life. Two knee replacements later, shoulder damage, back damage…the list goes on. Takes months to get the forms filed (they assist at the VA), but well worth it.
Hi Jo, This past week I had my longarm guy come and give my longarm a “spa” day. That was good. There was a quilt show in town which was very nice. I had my 11 year old granddaughter enter the quilt that she made (I helped minimally). There were five entries in the youth category and she got a blue ribbon and won a sewing machine. Yahoo! A really fun day. Yesterday I longarmed a baby quilt for my friend and today I will bind it. She does not enjoy putting binding on and I do. My friend has volunteered to make quilts for all the new babies in her church, her church is a large congregation with 600 members and growing. I think she may have bit off more than expected!
I just turned in midterm grades, so not a whole lot of stitching is going on here–except, one of my former-students-now-friend-and success-story has taken up quilting. He handstitched a Practice Quilt and got tangled in the binding join. I took a little out and finished the quilt for him. He was so excited that he started the next quilt. Last night he sent me a photo of block nine of twelve.
Halloween (5)costumes for my grandchildren. And Halloween quilt and fall tablerunners
Once a month I go to a sewing group. It’s held at a quilt shop. A while ago, they changed the mats on the cutting stations and now they have sort of a slick finish which I don’t like! I think the fabric slips around more. So I am cutting enough of my project to bring there and sew next month.
I am working on Anna’s Baskets by Laundry Basket Quilts. It’s a BOM at my local quilt store. I’m also working on a major cross stitch project called Lady Liberty by Needlework Press. It’s a doozy!
I’m working on making string blocks, both 5″ and 9″. Lots of stress going on around here, so string blocks are the perfect thing to sew. I’m going to make a quilt for my adult grandson, unless it’s too busy for him. I’ve made almost 200 of the 5″ ones and 18 of the 9″ ones. I love making these blocks so much! It’s mindless and relaxing, which is much needed in this crazy world right now!
I like making string blocks also, I can listen to an audio book while sewing. Mindless sewing as you said!
I hemmed 2 pairs of costume pants for my chorus and mended some loose threads that were poking out of a casing on a new pair of shorts – probably just in time for the weather to cool too much to wear them! LOL!
I am stitching blocks into rows for a quilt for my daughter and machine- quilting a beads pattern “sandwich” that I pin-basted over a year ago. Our county fair starts on Friday and I have some quilting and cross-stitching to turn in tomorrow to exhibit. Then my chorus has a show on the 11th that I need to rehearse a bit more. Add all the “stuff” around the house and yard that needs to be done and it’s going to be a busy few weeks coming up! Maybe after that I can sew for my own pleasure…. :)
I’m working on a ragtime quilt for my daughter. Also cutting out a 3 yard quilt that is a flag. It will be a Christmas present.
That cheddar print looks great with the quilt top! Can’t wait to see it finished.
I got distracted by the Halloween prints I found on the quilt meeting table at the meeting before last. I’ve pulled those all together into log cabin blocks with 9 patches of solid black and black/orange pieces that makes striking centers. I’ve got a pattern for bats and ghosts so want to make an odd number of each (always more interesting). With a beautiful panel for the center I’ve had for a while now…not sure if it will be centered or be placed asymmetrical. Never made myself a Halloween quilt, so am enjoying this! Once the bats & ghosts are finished, the layout of all the parts will make deciding what the quilt needs next pretty easy. Once the top is put together it will join the 18 other tops. Cutting battings for each one & adding the backing as I go. I’m going to quilt the first few on the Janome – it has a little wider throat. It’s a heavy-duty machine & sews FAST. Planned on straight line quilting for several that should cut down time a little & simplify things. This is so much fun now that I’m retired and have lots of time to do all this!
