What I’m Working On…

I was gone all day Saturday but still managed to get some sewing in this week.

I worked on my Tiny Nine Patch blocks. It looks like I got 25 finished.

I got another batch started for next week.

I also got my coin quilt bound. Notice the picture on the right. I pulled the quilt out from under the foot after I put my last stitch in and the bobbin thread came out. I had that much thread left and WHEW. I got the quilt bound just in time before I ran out of thread.

I loaded the next coin quilt. I loaded backing enough for two quilts so I’ll do both of them in the one loading. YAHOO!! Then they will be done.

I wrote in my last blog post that I needed to pick up a new UFO. I asked readers which one I should start on. The overwhelming thought was that I should pull out Hawaiian Sunset.

I’ve been so slow with making this quilt. SO SLOW. I think part of it is that the instructions stink. I am never a fan of magazine instructions and that’s why I make few quilts from magazines. Last time I pulled this out I got the block done.

I really just need to put them all together…why haven’t I done that? The icky instructions. I finally bit the bullet and gave it a try. The easiest thing I could do to get the quilt closer to a finish was to do the border. So that’s what I did.

The borders are all sewn together…now I need to get them ironed.

I hope this upcoming week that I can get the sashing cut.

The part I am least looking forward to is the setting triangles. I’m going to read the directions a couple of times and see if I can figure out an easier way make them. For now, I’m trying to just concentrate on one thing at a time…right now, sashing.

I did some playing around with this. I’ll tell you more about it in another post once I find some red buttons and see if my plan worked out. I have tiny red buttons here but can I find them? No. I remember deciding to store them here. I just can’t remember where here is now. UGH. I hate when that happens.

UPDATE: I found where I put the buttons for safekeeping. Sadly, they are too small. I ended up ordering some red buttons.

I’m happy with what I got done this week. I’m hoping I can get these projects all just a little further along next week.

  1. I’ve been looking forward to seeing Hawaiian Sunset come together every year you’ve made your UFO list. Thank you for choosing this one!

  2. The Hawaiian Sunset will be beautiful. I don’t know why magazine instructions are so confusing. That’s one reason why I quit buying them. The doily project looks interesting – looking forward to seeing what you’re doing with it.
    Love and prayers

  3. I have a doily like that! Same pattern. Can’t wait to see what you do with it. Also, for the setting triangles…. Have you ever watch Donna Jordan’s videos? She has done several with them. Check videos for Jordanfabrics.com.

You are making a lot of progress on your quilt finishes. What a good feeling. It is hard to accomplish a lot of sewing at this time of year. I am always torn between the outside gardens and the inside sewing projects. I guess that’s what rainy days are for.
On flosstube a person gave a hint to all of us who sew. She set up a special basket to contain all her “special” trims that she had purchased for special finishes. Maybe that would help you too.

  4. Give yourself some credit, you got a lot accomplished last week! If you aren’t crazy about the setting triangles make up your own design. I bet you can come up with something easier, and likely better. The simplicity of your coin quilts makes we want to jump into my stash and knock out a couple of my own.

  5. So glad you are working again on your Hawaiian Sunset UFO. It will be beautiful when it is finished. I don’t think I’ve ever made a quilt from magazine instructions, so now I am forewarned. You are so smart how you make your tiny nine-patches blocks and then have the next ones ready to sew. That is another one that I am looking forward to seeing you complete.

  6. Your Hawaiian Sunset quilt is beautiful. I love the colours. Looking forward to seeing it finished. And yes, I agree with you about instructions in quilting magazines, they’re really bad. I’m currently working on a quilted backpack and like you with your quilt, I’ve been a bit slow with mine because of the unclear instructions, as well as just other stuff going on… Another one of your quilts I’d love to see done is the one with red and cream quarter square triangles, or hour blocks. That looks beautiful too, and I love your checkerboard quilt too. You are so clever, it’s very inspiring. Saying prayers for your health journey

  7. Your work is so beautiful and inspirational! I can’t see how the setting triangles fir with the borders of your quilt so looking forward to pictures of progress. All my best wishes!

  8. Your Hawaiian Sunset is really getting close to done and ready for longarmning. Its amazing and I love the colors you put together. I have quite a few doilies and I’m intrigued with what are you doing with that one. Hope you are feeling better and that food is tasting like it should.

Good progress on your 9-patches. I love that you won the binding bobbin thread race! Hawaiian Sunset is coming along nicely. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the red buttons and lace crochet piece.
