What I’m Working On…

I had a busy week with work. YES, work. If you didn’t read an early blog post, I got a job! You can read it HERE if you missed it. I ran errands on Thursday and had family here Friday and Saturday so that didn’t leave much sewing time at all. Plus I’ve been helping two different friends out with their dogs while they were away.

I was happy I did get some time on Sunday. The sad part is that the sewing room was a bit of a mess. Everything just gets dumped in there when I’m busy.

After some quick cleaning up I decided to focus on a couple of quilts I need to long-arm for the upcoming benefit for the rescue I would with. They have a “paw”uction every November as a fundraiser. If anyone has something they want to donate, let me know.

The Cresco Ladies made these two quilt tops and I saved them thinking I would finish them and donate them.

I ended up pulling the one on the left and did that one first. Why, you might ask…well, it’s because I found a backing that would work for that one first. HA!

This was a thrift store find backing. I had to piece it together but it came together nicely.

I ended up getting that one all long-armed. I pick out some binding fabric and cut those strips too.

Then I pulled a backing for the next top…I thought about loading that one right away but didn’t. It’s getting the cream check backing fabric.

I really wanted to sew a couple of blocks together for my Tumalo Trail quilt…this one…

Here is how they looked…

That was enough motivation to get me wanting to work on it more so instead of loading the next quilt on the frame…I sewed a few more strip sets together to make more of these blocks.

I didn’t get a lot done but I did get some done. I’m happy with that.

This week is supposed to be crazy hot here in NE Iowa. The air conditioning in my sewing room isn’t the best so I’m going to try to do the sewing things downstairs where the air conditioning works great. The sewing room is on the upper floor of the house and that room is furtherest from the furnace so the air conditioning isn’t awesome.

I have two quilt UFOs that are waiting for me to do some cutting so I’m hoping I can work on that. The heat would be a good motivator to get me to do that. Those two projects are my Hawaiian Sunset quilt and my Tribute to Judie quilt. Fingers crossed I’ll get to them. I also have a couple of shirts to deconstruct and some fabric that needs to be cut into strips. I have plenty to keep me busy in the kitchen cutting.

School starts for all the grandkids this week so I think I’ll have a few less interruptions and responsibilities with all of them so maybe more sewing will happen around here than usual. I do have work and a doctor’s appointment though so we’ll see. I’m starting to really get the sewing itch. It’s been so long since I had some really good sewing time.

I think I’ll go upstairs and get the next dog quilt top loaded onto the longarm. That way if I get a couple of hours of free time I can get that quickly quilted. Sounds like a good plan!!

  1. It’s hot hot in Nebraska too! I have my next three sampler blocks chosen. I usually go one at a time, choose/cut out/sew but these might get grouped. Lately a few cleaning and organizing projects around the house have pulled me in. Much needed and the kind of work I’m more likely to do when the mood hits. Have a great week at work, Jo! Love the sewing you got done!

  2. I can sympathize on the messy quilt room. Mine had gotten bad, and I couldn’t figure out why I didn’t want to go in there and work on anything. I can’t create in clutter. I finally hit me, so I spent a morning cleaning it up. Yay! It lasted 2 days and I drug out 2 chair cushion projects. Now, it’s a mess all over again, and I’m stuck on the construction process for the cushions.☹️. Hate making 3 dimensional things! My mind doesn’t work that way. So, the mess is back and I’m avoiding my room again till I work out the cushion issue.
On a positive note, I LOVE the Tumalo Trail blocks you’ve made in repro fabrics!!!. Those are my least favorite colors to work with, but those are calling to my heart! Can’t wait to see it come together. Hope the job is going well and won’t keep you from your love of sewing. Missing your Sew with Jo segments, but I know you will do one when you get the chance. Till then, I keep watching reruns. . My husbands thinks I’m nuts! He continuously asks…”Haven’t you watched that one before? I know I’ve seen her sewing on that project…”. ‍♀️

  3. So funny that LOADING a quilt is what holds us back but once it’s on, ZOOM and it’s quilted, trimmed and bound

Wishing you a terrific week Jo.

  4. Even when you don’t have much time, you still make some progress. I’m glad the sewing bug bit you again. You do have many activities and projects to choose from whenever the mood hits you. You are in my thoughts and prayers for your appointment on Friday.

  5. Played hermit here today to avoid the heat…116 heat index. Ugh. But I sewed and felt no guilt at all! Joined rows on one top, played on my design floor and figured out a layout for a charity project. I can soooo relate to your sewing room Jo! Thanks for being so real!

  6. It is so nice to see that I am not the only person where things in the sewing room get a little crazy and messy. Your step outs for quilt progress is something I need to develop better. You are so good at making progress with little steps that add up.

  7. Jo, it’s not a mess if you can close the door on it and walk away. That said, today I am going to reset up my sewing area so I can get something done. I have avoided doing anything besides minimal clothing changes ( hems, small adjustments) since I tore it all down for wall painting. Wish me luck!
