Last week I finished a baby quilt. Â You can find that post here if you missed it. Â That one was made for the next baby girl and wasn’t for anyone specific. Â Hubby has a great nephew who is expecting. Â They aren’t finding out if it’s a boy or girl. Â If it’s a girl, the quilt will go there. Â If it’s a boy, I need a quilt.
That’s when I remembered that I had the blocks left over from the quilt I made for the fireman benefit. Â There were enough to make the exact same quilt. Â Here’s a reminder of what that looked like.
The idea for the quilt started with a video from Missouri Star and ended a little differently.
I liked the quilt and thought I could easily take the remaining blocks and make another quilt. Â Â Friday night after supper I sewed them together. Â Then started the debated. Â I don’t have any more fabric of the red that I used for the inner border.
I really don’t want to buy anything and want to find something in my stash to complete this project. Â I am auditioning a few options.

The upper right one is really a small checkerboard print with dark and light squares. Â I’m leaning towards the solid to the left.
Then I need to make a decision on the backing. Â There is enough of each of these….
I think I like the black and white best but if you look close it has a tiny flower in it which isn’t real masculine. Â That leaves me thinking the blue might be better. Â I don’t think either is “bad”…I just would like to make the best choice.
So readers…any advice fore me? Â What do you think for inner border? Â What do you think for backing?
Can you believe I need two more baby quilts after this one. Â Those I know what each is having and both of them I have a specific quilt in mind for. Â All I know is on I’m a roll with baby quilts in my future!!
what about a white border and the checked fabric for the backing?

Cute quilt! I like the solid red for border and either of the backings will work fine. The small flower should not be a problem…. it’s a baby quilt …. (and we need to steer away from the stereotyping)! Whatever you choose the quilt will be great!
I like the solid red and the checked backing. Your quilts are always wonderful and they will be glad to get such a nice gift.
In your picture of the squares it appears that the firetruck background is light blue so the blue check would be great for backing and inner border.
The quilt is super cute with the fire truck fabric and I think any of the options will work to finish it!
That’s a cute quilt! I think perhaps a narrow white oblack border and then either of the Reds. I like the blue for the background. Nice work!
I agree with Donna T. The red for the border and definitely the blue check for the backing. It ties the back to the front in a non feminine way. I wouldn’t use a floral for a boy quilt, no matter how small it is….but that’s just me.

If that is light blue in the fire truck blocks, why not use blue for a border? I like the check for the backing!

If you have some solid black, a thin border of that would allow you to use any red you like there I think. I am also in the ‘no flowers ‘ camp.
Solid red and blue check gets my vote.
Blue checked fabric for the backing. Solid red for borders or a blue perhaps a deeper shade than the fire engine fabric.

I’d rather have black as the black for a small border (1″) then the red border. I like the blue backing the best.
My pick would be the solid red or a solid white for the border and the blue check for the back. You always end up making great choices, Jo!
