Sorry about the late post today. Â Yesterday I spent too much time helping Kalissa and my thing got a little behind but that’s all okay. Â It’s all in name of being the mom and that being my first priority.
So this is what I’ve been working on….
I need a baby quilt. Â The sweet little baby is waiting on this and has been since December. Â I don’t have anything in mind for sure. Â I simply knew that I was drawn in to making some scrappy colorful blocks. Â Winter is getting the best of me and nothing can take a person out of the dull-drums like sewing bright fabrics.
I made up about 15 blocks and then started to play with ideas. Â (Sorry about the pictures-morning pictures when it’s still dark outside are never good). Â My initial thought was to have a big square of fabric in the middle. Â Something like 26″ x 26″ then make a border of these blocks. Then an outer border of the same inside fabric.
I didn’t need anything fancy…something useful and functional was my goal but nice too. Â Then I thought of putting her name in the center big square or her initials. Â My hope was to use things that I already have but…it’s been for forever since I’ve been at a quilt shop so Saturday I stopped.
I ended up bringing home two more fabrics. Â This one….
and this one.
I’m so confused and not particularly happy with any of the options. Â UGH.
Any suggestions? Â While I think and try to decided what to do for a layout, I know I’m going to need more blocks so I’m making more blocks.
I’m sure something will come to me,..or that one of you will have an inspiring idea….feel free to chime in with an idea. Â I’d love to hear it.

I like the blocks around the bright green fabric.
Either the bright green or the b/w letter print. Either will be really cute.
I feel like that bright green really balances and gives those fun blocks life. Maybe strips of blocks going across the quilt alternating with similar sized green strips? You could use one of those softer fabrics on the back for a completely different feeling there. Look forward to seeing what you do.
I also think the bright green one is the best choice. It pops the colors.
( The paisley is very cool, and compliments the colors, but does not look as bright and cheerful
Green dots or letter fabric – and as a quilter, I can’t leave well enough alone. . .
Center square of bright paisley, narrow border of bright green, border of pieced blocks, narrow border of bright green, wider border of bright paisley. . .
Green dots fabric! You can do her initials in scrappy to go with great scrappy border.
I think El is onto something with using both the paisley and the bright green dots with your cute little square would be charming. It would be colorful to wash away the ho hums of winter and still be bright and cheery for the baby. Hope you post the finished quilt so we can see what you came up with.
I think the alphabet fabric with oversize name letters in brights would be perfect!
Some of the cutest baby quilts I’ve seen are simple, stripes of wof strips of various fabrics with at least one row being something pieced (the blocks you’ve made) and then the name of the baby on another strip.
I forgot to add you could put your blocks on point for added interest. :)
I think using the blocks as an “inner border” looks really nice to me. Or, just do 2 rows or 3.
As to the background fabric, I agree that it’s iffy. No ideas as if yet. Hang in there!!
Your first fabric choice looks the best to me!!
Oh my. I see the red, the yellow and the turquoise blue and the choices you have dull the squares. Something bright would be my choice, but sometimes you have to work with what you have. And no matter what our comments are, you have to be happy with the results. And don’t forget how your quilting will add to the quilt. Good luck.
I like the paisley and bright green the best. If you are making more blocks, perhaps put some in the middle and off center them with or without the initials and then add the different borders with one of them being your scrappy blocks. I used to think everything had to be symmetrical but I’m stepping outside that box more often! However you do it, it’ll be wonderfully made and the family will be delighted it was made by you!
I think the green dots. How about a larger version of your blocks in the middle (middle of the middle???).

Could applique the word loved in bigger homemade letters
and then the baby’s initials. Love your blocks.

I really like the paisley. It probably looks brighter “in person” than it does on my iPad. The green dot is my second choice, though. Lucky baby, whatever you choose.
I love the bright green with the dots too. It just really goes with all the bright fabrics in the blocks. A baby would love it. Very stimulating.
The lime green would be my choice. Maybe with the letters for the backing.
I like the green the best, but if you want a more subdued one, that last one B&W?) would work, and the green can be the name/initial/appliqued motif.

the idea of a BIG block for the middle is good ….. if you go with name or initials in middle then you are finished….
I was going to suggest the same thing as El. I think it would be a very cute and fairly quick quilt. I may borrow the idea for a baby quilt I need in March.
Could you make one of your pieced blocks in a larger size, maybe 12″ or even 16″‘ then surround it with several borders, including one using all of your small pieced blocks? I really like both the green dot and paisley fabrics, and you could make a border of each. Have fun! Can’t wait to see the finished quilt!

for me, the paisleys are the best choice, the colors of the blocks – the colors of the paisleys. I was suprised you were looking for another background ;)

Ok this wasn’t one of the fabrics you showed us but what about using a solid red fabric with your fun blocks?
The green dots look great with your blocks! Maybe a large block in the centre??
I like the bright green the best. Do you have any children’s panel fabrics in your stash? Or maybe one of those panels that is supposed to be made into a book – you could use that as blocks, and then have your colorful blocks as a border. Just a thought …
