What I’m Working On….

I have LOTS of projects going on right now.  I am quilting my daughter’s quilt that I showed you yesterday.  I just pieced the backing for my UFO #4 last night.  I have three quilts going that I am actively sewing one but what did I do???  Start a new project.  Before you laugh…let me defend myself.

I’ve wanted to make this quilt Cactus Patch, from Bonnie Hunter’s book Scraps & Shirttails: Reuse, Re-pupose, Recycle! The Art of “Quilting Green”.  The only problem…the quilt has string piecing and I am not a fan of string piecing.  I decided to do the string piecing as a leader and ender project sewing a couple strips in each pass.  Amazingly, my pile is growing and I am starting to square a few of the blocks up.  I think that by the time I get a couple other things off the sewing table, I will have all the string piecing done.

If you haven’t seen the book, I can give you a tiny preview through my blog….here’s another quilt I am working on from the book….and here’s a baby quilt I finished using the same blocks.  There are several quilts I am planning on making too.  I definitely give the book 4.5 stars.

I have a graduation in June and I have it in the back of my mind that this just might be the gift.  We’ll see how it all turns out and if I get enough time to work on it.  In the meantime, I am going to SLOWLY plug away on it.

  1. I’m antsy to get back to a BH pattern. I have been working my UFOs and none are one of hers….wonder why? Guess I like BH so much that none ever make it to the UFO list! Sandi

  2. I love Bonnie’s books too…. so full of inspiration……..she is amazing in person too if you ever get the chance at one of her classes.
Those left overs from squaring up are a great start to crumb blocks……what can you do with crumbs……check out Bonnie’s wed site for all kinds of ideas. I took a whole box of them and made a series of kids quilts with their names on them for Birthday gifts one year. I made the crumbs from scraps but they were my leaders and enders for many many months before.
Then I used Tonya’s unruly letter book and pieced the names…..what fun!

    Happy sewing

Love Bonnie’s quilts too but I am still laughing! You are too funny ‘starting’ another project.

  4. You mean you aren’t supposed to start new projects when you already are doing too many? Opps, I guess I misread the original instructions. I love your blocks and am always impressed when people work on Bonnie’s quilts: so many little pieces.

  5. Starting a project using leaders and enders, with scraps, is not a new project. It’s clean up! I love Bonnie’s books.

  6. I’m not a fan of making string blocks either! Sounds like you worked it out to your advantage with the leader enders, which is so great and relatively painless!

  7. Jo: I do like string blocks, and your post reminded me that I have Bonnie’s book and haven’t started a project from it yet!
Personally, I would keep any trimmings that are large enough for crumbs, but that is just me.
