What I’m Reading: The Story Hour

I just finished up listening to the audio book version of  The Story Hour: A Novel (P.S.) by Thrity Umrigar.

If you’re looking for a head scratch-er novel, this is it.

I was so excited when I started listening to this book.  It was so good.  Amazing actually.  I was squeezing in every moment I could to listen because I couldn’t wait to tell you all about the newest and most amazing novel I’ve read….and then the book ended.  Yep.  It just ended.  THE END.  Right in the middle of the story, just when I was going to find out if it would all come full circle, it ended.  Done.  No more chapters…no nothing.  I was listening on my phone so I rewound a little way..nope it ended.  I checked to make sure I had downloaded all the parts.  Nope.  ENDED.

Here’s what Amazon has to say about it, “An experienced psychologist, Maggie carefully maintains emotional distance from her patients. But when she meets a young Indian woman who tried to kill herself, her professional detachment disintegrates. Cut off from her family in India, Lakshmi is desperately lonely and trapped in a loveless marriage to a domineering man who limits her world to their small restaurant and grocery store.

Moved by her plight, Maggie treats Lakshmi in her home office for free, quickly realizing that the despondent woman doesn’t need a shrink; she needs a friend. Determined to empower Lakshmi as a woman who feels valued in her own right, Maggie abandons protocol, and soon doctor and patient have become close friends.

But while their relationship is deeply affectionate, it is also warped by conflicting expectations. When Maggie and Lakshmi open up and share long-buried secrets, the revelations will jeopardize their close bond, shake their faith in each other, and force them to confront painful choices.

Amazon readers gave the book 4.4 stars.  Me not that much.  I would likely have given the book five stars had it actually had an ending….but alas….3.5 stars is the best I could muster.  Has anyone else read this??  Did you feel like the book came to an ending….ah…what a waste of what could have been a really good book.

  1. Oh good to know–sounds like such a great read—you know, though, a lot of endings are “lame”…I may get it for my Kindle…..thanks for your review…Have you read any of Ann Cleeves books???–mysteries: “Come Death and High Water” and “Blue Lightening” are good….hugs, Julierose

  2. I watched a really good movie and it had an ending like that. Just ticked me off that you don’t find out how it really ended. I felt cheated out of two hours of watching time…so thanks for the warning!
