What I’m Reading: The Last Year of the War

Right around Christmas time Audible had a great sale on books.  It was like half off or something crazy.  I ended up letting myself get four audio books.  I was so excited.  I’m finally getting a chance to listen to them.  The latest listen is The Last Year of the War by Susan Meissner.  It was already in my library and then a blog reader left a comment that said they thought I’d like the book.  Well that prompted me to get in downloaded and listened to.

Here’s what Amazon has to say:In 1943, Elise Sontag is a typical American teenager from Iowa—aware of the war but distanced from its reach. Then her father, a legal U.S. resident for nearly two decades, is suddenly arrested on suspicion of being a Nazi sympathizer. The family is sent to an internment camp in Texas, where, behind the armed guards and barbed wire, Elise feels stripped of everything beloved and familiar, including her own identity.

The only thing that makes the camp bearable is meeting fellow internee Mariko Inoue, a Japanese-American teen from Los Angeles, whose friendship empowers Elise to believe the life she knew before the war will again be hers. Together in the desert wilderness, Elise and Mariko hold tight the dream of being young American women with a future beyond the fences.

But when the Sontag family is exchanged for American prisoners behind enemy lines in Germany, Elise will face head-on the person the war desires to make of her. In that devastating crucible she must discover if she has the will to rise above prejudice and hatred and re-claim her own destiny, or disappear into the image others have cast upon her.

The Last Year of the War tells a little-known story of World War II with great resonance for our own times and challenges the very notion of who we are when who we’ve always been is called into question.

Amazon readers gave the book 4.7 stars.  175 reviewed the book and 75% gave the book 5 stars.  That is an incredible rating.   I am giving the book the same, 4.7 stars.  I was so sad to have the book end.  I wanted more even though the book ended perfectly.

I HIGHLY recommend this one.  You can find it HERE.

I have read other books by this author that I recommend…
A Fall of Marigolds
Secrets of a Charmed Life

That’s when you know you have read a good book – you don’t want it to end.

I haven’t read the 3 books that you recommend from this author, but I have read others by Susan Meissner, and enjoy her writing. I’ll have to check my library for more of her books.
