What I’m Reading: Seeds of Deception

I got super excited when I was looking through my online library.  I’m a huge Linda Castillo fan and knew she had a new book out.  I immediately put my name on the hold list.  Then I was looking some more and saw another name of a book on the new book list and saw that no, the first book was not the newest full length book…this second book I found on the list was.  I ended up looking at the first book by her that I found and realized that this book, Seeds of Deception: Kate Burkholder  was actually only a short book.  Bummer…yes but not really.  I’d take a short story so I stayed on the list for the book and also put myself on the list for the new full length book too.

I’ve long been reading the Kate Burkholder series and have enjoyed all of the books.  Kate is a small town police chief who was Amish but left the Amish ways.  She’s dating State Agent John Tomasetti and their relationship is always a big part of the books.

It was an okay book.  I really missed the long book format and wanted more but a short story is after all only a short story.  It was nice to read about Kate as a teenager.

Here’s what Amazon has to say:

“It’s autumn in Painter’s Mill, and fourteen year old Katie Burkholder has been tasked with picking apples in Zimmerman’s Orchard with her brother. It’s just another day filled with chores—until her best friend Mattie arrives to help. Somehow, boredom transforms into fun and games whenever the girls are together. The innocent fun comes to an end when Billy Marquardt and his gang of friends interrupts. Katie is no prude, but she knows better than to associate with the older English boys, especially since they’re known troublemakers. Mattie has no such compunction. Thumbing her nose at the Ordnung and all of the Amish rules, she disappears into the old barn with Billy.

Moments later, the Zimmerman’s barn is consumed by fire. Katie suspects Billy had something to do with the blaze, but he denies it. When the facts don’t add up, Katie begins her own investigation—and she doesn’t like what she finds. Will her friendship with Mattie survive the truth?

Amazon readers give the book 4.3 stars.  I’d give the book 4.2 stars…I’m still on the list waiting for the full length book, Down a Dark Road: A Kate Burkholder Novel, and am so hoping it doesn’t disappoint.  If you haven’t tried this series and like detective/crime books I highly recommend this series.

  1. You won’t be disappointed in her new full length book. I am the librarian in Postville. The job does have a few perks. I got to read the book first!
