I told you a bit ago that I had read the book The Coronor by Jennifer Graeser Dornbush. I had said I enjoyed the book but the ending although complete, left me wanting more and set the book up perfectly for a series. Well, I was right because there was a next book and today I’m planning on telling you about it.
The book is Secret Remains by Jennifer Graeser Dornbush.

I ended up liking the book. The story continued from the first book. I very much enjoyed the continuation of the characters in this new book. It is not a book that will go down in history as the most amazing book ever but it was good. It was a believable story. The characters are likable. The telling was great. For me, that’s what makes a good book.
I love the small-town feel of the book and story. I’m from a small town so visiting the bakery for the best rolls ever is something that seems like a hometown and natural thing to do. Interacting with people you went to high school with is totally normal. I really like the book and am excited that I caught this series early on.
Here is what Amazon had to say:
“It’s been 12 years since Sandi Parkman went missing after being dropped off at home by her schoolmate, Nick Larson, now the Sheriff of Freeport, Michigan. When a construction crew unearths Sandi’s bones–along with Nick’s letterman jacket and one of his hairs–Nick becomes suspect number one in the murder.
Dr. Emily Hartford, the daughter of Freeport’s medical examiner, is called in to investigate, but the case is about to get personal. Nick was Emily’s high school love, and now she has to either clear his name–or contend that he’s the killer. As she delves into the case, a host of other suspects emerge: a coterie of Nick’s jock friends from high school; Sandi’s sister, Tiffany, now a dancer at a local strip club; and James VanDerMuellen, a trust funder who’s recently returned to Freeport.
As the autumn skies darken over Freeport and the holiday season looms, Emily must sift through more than Sandi’s brittle bones to solve the case. Can she exonerate Nick–and rekindle their long-smoldering romance? The race is on to find the truth.“
Amazon readers gave the book 4.5 stars. I’m going to agree. I liked the book and am super excited about having a new series to look forward to. Speaking of looking forward, there is a third book coming out in the Fall. I’ll be watching for that!!
In the meantime, the author has another book Hole in the Woods and my online library has it so I’m off to get that and start listening. I looked on Amazon and that book is currently free for all Kindle Unlimited users. You can learn more about that HERE.
I also preordered the next book in the series. It is called Last One Alive. You can find it HERE.
Hi Jo,
I tried to get this audio book, my library doesn’t have it yet, but I put it on my list. It actually says that “The Coroner” is #1 in the series and “Secret Remains” is #2. Not sure if you want to go back and read the first one. I like it when they say which of the series it is. Thanks for the heads up, its nice to know if a book is worth reading. I would always finish a book if it was slow or not, but recently if after two hours the story is not going anywhere, I just quit the book! How long will you put up with a book?
Unfortunately, I typically finish them. I keep thinking something good is going to happen.
Me too Jo, I worry that I’ll miss a great ending!
Based on your recommendation, I did read The Coroner. I loved it! I’m going to get the second book soon and read that one as well. Thank you for letting us know what you’re reading!
I read them both and liked them. Was a little surprised with the ending of the 2nd one so glad to hear another is coming. Thanks for the reco!
