It’s been a bit since I’ve listened to an audiobook. When I was driving to Des Moines to see Wicked, I knew a book would be a great companion, so before I left, I made sure I had an audiobook downloaded.
It was easy for me to pick Rage by Linda Castillo. I’ve loved her books. In fact, this is book #17 of the Kate Burkholder series. I’ve read every on of them and have read a few of the short version books she puts out in between. Reading these is pure comfort.

Reading a series is so different than reading a standalone book. If you are like me, you love to hear the news and changes about your old friends. Is someone pregnant? Oh, they got a new cat. It’s just like going away and living with them for the portion of your book. It’s just comfort reading minus the murder part of the book. HA!! This book deals with the trafficking of people. Overall, I really liked it. If you are new to the series, I highly suggest starting with book one, Sworn to Silence. You can find it HERE.
Here is what Amazon had to say:
Summer has arrived with a vengeance in Painters Mill, and a macabre discovery by three Amish children brings the quiet to a grinding halt. Chief of Police Kate Burkholder arrives on scene to find the dismembered body of 21-year-old Samuel Yutzy, a local Amish man who owned a successful landscaping business. What twisted individual murdered him in such a sadistic way?
The investigation has barely begun when, miles away, a second body is found, stuffed into a barrel and dumped in a ravine. The deceased is 21-year-old Aaron Shetler, Samuel Yutzy’s best friend. What could these two young Amish men have been involved in that led to such violent ends?
With a heat wave bearing down, Kate learns quickly that, for reasons she doesn’t understand, no one is willing to talk about what happened to the men. Just as she begins to fear the case may be hopeless, a mystery woman comes forward and reveals that fun-loving Aaron and Samuel had recently befriended some very unsavory characters―individuals who may have ties to a larger, more sinister, black market.
To solve the case, Kate must delve into the most sordid corners of her community, but when she gets too close, the killers target Kate herself. Will the secrets simmering beneath the surface of Painters Mill take another life before she can expose the truth? Or will Kate be the final victim?
Amazon readers gave the book 4.6 stars. I would agree. I love all of the books by Linda Castillo. I love getting into a series and feeling like the characters are my old friends.

I love this series as well! I also feel the way you do that this becomes a visit with an old friend. Some writers get stuck with a series and end up repeating the same plot with minor variations. Not Linda Castillo. She manages to find new and fresh ideas for each new book.
That sounds like a good series. I think I will see if I can get it to listen to. For some reason in my older age, I can’t handle reading anything that suspense in it, but I can listen to them. Right, doesn’t make sense!
I love these books too! They keep you coming back! Hugs,
I love ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ the Kate Burkholder series. Linda Castillo does a wonderful job in writing this.
Glad you did a book review…I’ve listened to all the Freida McFadden audio books on Libby and needed a new author.
I’ve enjoyed several of the books in this series. Thanks for reminding me to read a few more!
I read it a while back and am now reading her latest volume of short stories, “A Dark Path”. I have read all of her books and enjoy them – great stories! And I relate to them because of where the setting, Holmes County OH which is a huge Amish area – I live in a neighboring county and all the places mentioned in the books make them that much more relevant to me…
