I just finished up listening to Karin Slaughter’s newest book Pretty Girls: A Novel. I was so excited to see that she had a new book out. She had been won of my favorite authors that I have read everything from.
Sadly I didn’t love it. The book does not include any of my old favorite characters that I have come to love. The book is a complete stand alone…but that’s not all that didn’t excite me.The plot…unbelievable. There is a bad guy after Claire…she doesn’t know who to trust so she trusts absolutely no one…. all the while the bad guy has her sister and is doing unthinkable things to her-but Claire rather than call any help, just putters about making her own plan. On top of that, the plan is lame.
Oh..and about the unthinkable stuff. Too much description is put into it. The book is graphic and frankly the violence is disgusting.
Here’s what Amazon had to say, “More than twenty years ago, Claire and Lydia’s teenaged sister Julia vanished without a trace. The two women have not spoken since, and now their lives could not be more different. Claire is the glamorous trophy wife of an Atlanta millionaire. Lydia, a single mother, dates an ex-con and struggles to make ends meet. But neither has recovered from the horror and heartbreak of their shared loss—a devastating wound that’s cruelly ripped open when Claire’s husband is killed.
The disappearance of a teenage girl and the murder of a middle-aged man, almost a quarter-century apart: what could connect them? Forming a wary truce, the surviving sisters look to the past to find the truth, unearthing the secrets that destroyed their family all those years ago . . . and uncovering the possibility of redemption, and revenge, where they least expect it.”
I really-really hope this isn’t a new trend for this author. I miss the series characters, the more believable stories and the less graphic violence. I’m giving the book a 3.5. The book wasn’t awful…just not for me and I did like the letter’s Claire’s dad wrote.
I agree wholeheartedly with you! I normally love her books, but this one I had to force myself to finish. I listen on Audible when I’m trudging along on the treadmill to make the time go by faster – lol – but this book made my walk seem to last forever. Hopefully her next book will be back to what we’ve known and loved.
the book cover caught my eye as I was glancing through blogs this morning and I had to stop and read – Karin Slaughter is one of my favorite authors and I was surprised I didn’t recognize the book cover or title, I always read her books – I went to my Kindle to see if I had it and just hadn’t read it yet – I had it, really I didn’t remember it – I then went in to manage my accounts to see when I have gotten the book – back in September – must not have been memorable – I sure didn’t remember it and I normally love all her books – I must not have been good!!! I too hate it when an author spins off a bad book.
I got through half the book and then turned it back in to audible. Too graphic for me.
