I just finished up the book, Mattie by Judy Alter. This book is one that I actually read. Most books I tell you about are actually audio books.
This book was printed in 1997 but was available as a Kindle book. When I was looking for a book it came up as a suggested book after I read The Midwife of Hope River. (by the way several blog readers read that book after my suggestion and I’ve gotten email that they loved it too) The book Mattie was only 99 cents so I thought I would give it a try. Typically the cheap books or free books aren’t something I want to read but this was. It’s historical fiction about the first woman doctor in Nebraska.
I enjoyed the book as it’s written in first person. It tells about overcoming poverty and fighting against odds to succeed-both topics that appeal to me.
Here’s what Amazon has to say about it, “Hired to care for the daughter of an influential doctor, the illegitimate Mattie fights for her dreams and eventually becomes a doctor herself, and she endures the challenges of early Nebraska throughout her years of practice.”
Amazon readers give it 4.5 stars. I think I would give it four stars…the reason not the 4.5. I just think I wanted a more exciting ending. It was a fine ending…I was just wanting something magical to happen-something like they all lived happily ever af
