What I’m Reading: Hidden Among the Stars

I just finished up listening to the book Hidden Among the Stars by Melanie Dobson.  I saw that this was a book about WWII times and that’s one of my favorite time period books to read so I grabbed it up.

The book was good.  It does have a bit of a christian fiction theme to it but not super preachy so it was okay.  Don’t get me wrong, christian fiction is okay but I don’t always want to feel like I’m at church when I’m reading a book.  For me, the “twist” wasn’t a big twist but that didn’t deter me from the book.

Here’s what Amazon had to say:
The year is 1938, and as Hitler’s troops sweep into Vienna, Austrian Max Dornbach promises to help his Jewish friends hide their most valuable possessions from the Nazis, smuggling them to his family’s summer estate near the picturesque village of Hallstatt. He enlists the help of Annika Knopf, his childhood friend and the caretaker’s daughter, who is eager to help the man she’s loved her entire life. But when Max also brings Luzia Weiss, a young Jewish woman, to hide at the castle, it complicates Annika’s feelings and puts their entire plan―even their very lives―in jeopardy. Especially when the Nazis come to scour the estate and find both Luzia and the treasure gone.

Eighty years later, Callie Randall is mostly content with her quiet life, running a bookstore with her sister and reaching out into the world through her blog. Then she finds a cryptic list in an old edition of Bambithat connects her to Annika’s story . . . and maybe to the long-buried story of a dear friend. As she digs into the past, Callie must risk venturing outside the safe world she’s built for a chance at answers, adventure, and maybe even new love.”

Amazon readers gave the book 4.8 stars.  That’s a high rating for Amazon.  I did notice that many of the reviews there referenced the author’s other books.  That lead me down a rabbit hole.  She has other books that look good that I haven’t read.  YAHOO!!  New books have just been discovered!  This book I’d give 4.3 stars.

  1. Jo, I haven’t read this, but thought it may be of interests to you.

A Short History of World War I
    by James L. Stokesbury

A Short History of World War I is the first history of this war to be written in twenty years. It incorporates recent research and current thinking about the war in a highly readable and lively style.

I picked up a book at the Library today Never Turn Your Back on an Angus Cow by Dr. Jan Pol with David Fisher – I used to watch Dr. Pol when it was on early Sat. morning but it isn’t on any longer – I don’t get Nat Geo (the channel it comes on) so I picked up the book. I am just on the first chapter but it is an enjoyable read. I would recommend it.

  3. Jo, I’m going to look this book up. I read The nightingale by Kristin Hanna and loved it. This book sounds like a similar theme. Thanks for your posts and praying for you and your family.

I read a lot of WWII books too and into one set in England where the heroine can’t decide between the rick British Bloke or the Poor American Soldier. Where the Daffodils Bloom is the name. Hubby just finished reading Bean Town Girls and loved it. Now I will have to read that one too. Thanks for your reviews.
