What I’m Reading: After That Night

If you’ve been a blog reader for a while here, you know I am a big fan of the author Karin Slaughter. I actually have about four authors and once I hear they have a new book coming, I preorder it. That’s the reason I keep Audible. It’s my luxury to not have to wait for a book and get it immediately. I just keep the lowest subscription and count it as my treat.

My most recent must-have too was After That Night by Karin Slaughter.

I started reading Karin Slaughter books due to my daughter Kayla’s recommendation. I started WAY back, when the book Triptych came out. That book caught my attention in a big way and I was hooked on Will Trent then. Every time a new book comes out by her, I snap it up. This was no different.

A television series has come out that features Will Trent. I watched it. The series is okay but it’s not the book. The book is good and the character to me doesn’t match Will at all. Will is tall. Will has scars. Will is odd but it’s easy to love him…the guy on television is short, has dark hair…not Will at all. I think it was very poorly cast.

Anyway…back to the book. I loved it. I think it’s actually one of my favorites of the series. Sometimes Will is undercover and Sara is not in the book much. I like it best when they are together. Sometimes it’s a bigger story with lots of bad guys. This one is solving the mystery of Sara’s rape which happened several years before the book starts.

Here is what Amazon has to say:
Will Trent and Sara Linton are back! This is the eleventh electrifying thriller featuring GBI investigator Will Trent and medical examiner Sara Linton from New York Times bestselling author Karin Slaughter.

After that night, nothing was ever the same again.

Fifteen years ago, Sara Linton’s life changed forever when a celebratory night out ended in a violent attack that tore her world apart. Since then, Sara has remade her life. A successful doctor, engaged to a man she loves, she has finally managed to leave the past behind her.

Until one evening, on call in the ER, everything changes. Sara battles to save a broken young woman who’s been brutally attacked. But as the investigation progresses, led by GBI Special Agent Will Trent, it becomes clear that Dani Cooper’s assault is uncannily linked to Sara’s.

And it seems the past isn’t going to stay buried forever.

Amazon readers gave the book 4.6 stars. I totally agree. It was so good. I do highly recommend this series but start it at the beginning. If you like police stories with a big dose of whodunnit, you’ll love this series as well. Really, no one writes them better than Karin Slaughter. I will admit that from time to time the author has written a book that was a little too gruesome, this one was not one of those.

You can find the book HERE. You can find the series in order HERE. One other thing to note. The first two books are only Will Trent stories. Then in the third book, Sara joins Will. The fun thing is that Sara had her own series of five books called the Grant County Series. I love that those two combined.

    1. I love Karin Slaughter!! I totally agree with you on this book. Thanks to your daughter I’m now reading Freida McFadden and from you Alan Eskens. Have you ever read Janet Evanovich?? If you want a mystery with humor try hers but start at One for the Money. I find the earlier ones funnier.

      1. ELIZABETH CARMAN

I agree completely. The Janet Evanovich series that begins with One for the Money is laugh out loud pee in your pants funny especially the first dozen books.

  1. I totally agree that the TV character doesn’t match the one in the book. That was a bit of disappointment. Thanks for this review.

  2. I usually don’t read mysteries and especially not gruesome stuff, but I may try one of these. I’ve watched one episode of the Will Trent TV show; I didn’t think it was too bad but I didn’t have the book to compare it to. Very recently, another TV show was made based on a book that my husband and I both loved and thought was hilarious. I couldn’t even tell the TV show was based on the same book. I only watched one episode because my husband said he gave up after 3.

  3. I love Karen slaughter! I just finished one of her books from last year. I had no idea that they had created a series. I will have to check it out but agree that it is hard when they don’t seem to cast to the character in the book or when they veer from the actual plot
