What I’m Reading: A Fall of Marigolds

I just finished up listening to the audio book A Fall of Marigolds by Susan Meissner.  Not long ago I told you about another book by the same author, Secrets of a Charmed Life which I really enjoyed.  When reading the reviews of that book I had seen that the author had wrote other books and was off to find one.

I landed on  A Fall of Marigolds and am very glad I did.

The book tells two mirrored stories that are linked by a scarf that is covered with marigolds.  The author tells both stories very well…so well that twice the book caught me with a tear or two in my eyes.  Both stories were interesting to me.   Clara’s told at the time of immigration and the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire and Taryn’s at the time of 9-11.

Here’s what Amazon had to say, “September 1911. On Ellis Island in New York Harbor, nurse Clara Wood cannot face returning to Manhattan, where the man she loved fell to his death in the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. Then, while caring for a fevered immigrant whose own loss mirrors hers, she becomes intrigued by a name embroidered onto the scarf he carries…and finds herself caught in a dilemma that compels her to confront the truth about the assumptions she’s made. Will what she learns devastate her or free her?

September 2011. On Manhattan’s Upper West Side, widow Taryn Michaels has convinced herself that she is living fully, working in a charming specialty fabric store and raising her daughter alone. Then a long-lost photograph appears in a national magazine, and she is forced to relive the terrible day her husband died in the collapse of the World Trade Towers…the same day a stranger reached out and saved her. Will a chance reconnection and a century-old scarf open Taryn’s eyes to the larger forces at work in her life?

I really liked the book.  I am happy to say that Amazon readers did too.  They gave it 4.5 stars and I totally agree.  I would recommend the book.

  1. I loved A Fall of Marigolds when I read it a couple of years ago and I just started Secrets of a Charmed Life yesterday. I didn’t notice they were by the same author! I have been on a book-buying spree lately and had to start a list on Wunderlist so I wouldn’t reorder the same book twice (again) when I’m looking on Amazon. I justify it by saying I won’t have to buy any when I’m retired! Reading is one of my greatest pleasures.

  2. I read Secrets of a Charmed Life on your recommendation and enjoyed it very much. I’ve also recommended it to friends. I had thought about reading some more of Susan Meissner’s work but of course, there are too many books, too little time. I will definitely make time to read this one. Also glad to hear your surgery went well and that you are back among us. I enjoy your blog and your motivation.

Hi Jo, I hope that all went well with your surgery. This has been quite the year for you but I admire how you face everything head on. I had foot surgery many years ago and it was for bunion but they also broke and straightened my big toe. I will say it was a lot better walking after. Have a good and speedy recovery.
I also have enjoyed some of the books you recommend when I can find them in my library.
Big hugs and God Bless Sandra Davidson in Canada
