What I’m Making: Boston Cream Hawaiian Rolls

I think Rick is to blame. I have more recipes to share than crafts. HA!! Let me just say, we’ve been eating good and these rolls were top ten. Everyone loved them.

I have this thing about seeing recipe that I have to try. Typically, they are “too good to be true recipes”, or “too easy to be true recipes” that catch my attention. I saw a reel for Boston Cream Hawaiian Rolls from All Recipes. You can find the recipe HERE. It looks too easy to be true so, of course, I had to try it.

Here is Kelli trying a finished and oh my, they were good.

Here are the ingredients I used.

  • 1 (12 count) package Hawaiian rolls, separated into 12 rolls
  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 (3,5 ounce) package vanilla instant pudding mix, such as  Jell-O®
  • 1 1/2 cups whipped topping
  • 1 3/4 cups milk, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips

I started with a pack of Hawaiian rolls. The recipe called for a dozen, but that package size was sold out, so I bought the 24-pack.

They get buttered and put in the oven for five minutes.

While they were in the oven, I mixed up the cream mixture.

After they were out, I used the handle of the spoon and poked a hole in the side.

Then I piped the cream into each of the rolls. I only made up cream for 12 rolls, but had enough to do all 24.

Here they are all filled. I need to learn to do a neater job. No one cared.

Then I melted the chocolate and dipped the roll tops in it.

All evidence that they started as a Hawaiian Roll was gone. I dipped all of them. Again, there was enough to do all 24 with the amount the recipe for 12 called for.

Kelli and tried one right away. They were awesome. Then we put them in the refrigerator. We tried a cold one hours later. OH MY WORD!!! They were wonderful. The kids loved them. The adults loved them.

I will for sure make these again. They would be great made the day before and then served at a shower or family get together. As I noted, the cream and the chocolate that was called for to make the dozen had enough left over to do all 24. SO GOOD!!

I really want to make these the next time all of the kids are home. Yum!!

  1. We love the Hawaiian rolls so this sounds like a winner. I will make them. I recently made your Beef n Noodles in my instant pot and it was a hit. Thanks for sharing, I love that you and Rick enjoy cooking together and trying new things.

  2. Oh my, these sound delicious! I already am on the hook for making Hawaiian roll ham/egg/cheese sliders AND cinnamon roll sliders as my meal contribution for every quilting retreat I go to – plus family Christmas brunch…dare I add these to my menu as well?!? lol

  3. Going to the grocery store tomorrow and buying the cheesecake pudding. Can’t wait to try these. Look so simple. Thanks for the recipe.

  4. Jo, tell us how to mix up the cream you piped inside the rolls. I notice you bought the cheesecake pudding, not just the vanilla flavor.

  5. I just made these. I used a sandwich bag to pipe the pudding. What a mess I made. I am patiently waiting to try them. Thanks for sharing recipes!
