No joking…I think I look forward to eating ham bone soup even more than I ever look forward to eating ham. That says a lot as ham is likely my favorite meat.
When the kids were all home last we had ham. It was a great bone in ham…my favorite. No spiral hams for us!!
Long ago I would make Ham Bone Soup on the stove boiling the ham and beans for a LONG time. It is so much easier with my Instant Pot Pressure Cooker. I have a 6 quart size and can get a ham bone in it.
This is what I did….In the pot I put:
8 cups of water
1 bag of Great Northern Beans
1 larger onion chopped
1/4 teaspoon of pepper
3 Tablespoons of ham broth seasoning
1 meaty ham bone
I have a bean setting on my pot so I locked the cover in place, turned the valve and pressed the bean setting. Easy-Peasy.
The ham comes out perfect for flaking.
It falls right off the bone.
I put the meat back in the pot.
I then mixed 2 Tablespoons of cornstarch with enough water for it to absorb. I turned the pot onto saute and stirred in the cornstarch mixture. Test the soup to see if it’s the consistency you like. If you want it thicker, mix another batch of cornstarch. I taste at this point too. Some hams are super salty and no more salt is needed. Some aren’t as salty and do need salt added to the soup. Make it to your taste and liking.
Here’s what mine looked like….
Oh my…YUM. I love Ham Bone Soup. It’s my favorite and happily Hubby loves it too. I made grilled cheese sandwiches to with it and that was the perfect supper for us.
I don’t know how many times I made this before I had my Instant Pot Pressure Cooker and ended up burning the soup as it had to cook so long. Since my Instant Pot Pressure Cooker I’ve never burned a batch…of soup or anything else. I love it!!
Hormel Foods sells bone in spiral cut ham.
They are great. It is what we had for Christmas.
Easy to serve with the bonus of a great ham bone.
Oh yum I’ve always done in crockpot with the jar beans I’ll be trying my insta pot next time but it’ll be cornbread with ours.
Looks great… Made ham bean soup today…without your great kitchen appliance..I think an insta pot is in my future….love your blog and read it every day…a fan from Ontario Canada
My southern husband loves to cook with country ham (as opposed to what he calls “city ham.”). It is hard to find here, though. He’s planning ham scraps with rutabagas tomorrow. I don’t eat pork, so it is all his!
Jo, this sounds great! I also use instant potato flakes to thicken up soup. The potato takes on the flavor of the sauce and I’ve never ended up with a cornstarch flavor.
I’ve never seen the ham broth seasoning before. I’ll have to look for that next time I’m at the store. I usually make my ham and bean soup in the crock pot and sometimes use a package of mixed beans after picking out the lima beans. Someday maybe I’ll get a instant pot.
Oh, yum! That soup looks so good! And toasted cheese sandwiches to go with! I’ll be looking for a Beans setting when I hope to get an Instant Pot in a couple of months. Thanks for mentioning the size you have; I was thinking of that size for myself. I’ve just discovered a guy’s website, http://www.pressureluck.com; he posts only Instant Pot recipes so I’m gathering recipes to try. There is one he has posted called French Onion Chicken that looks delicious, along with his French Onion Soup, and many others. Thanks for posting your recipes using your Instant Pot Recipes and the others that you so graciously share with us. They are much appreciated!
