Last week I made the decision to leave my Virginia Bound quilt alone for some thinking time. Â I didn’t come up with a final plan with it so decided to move on to a new UFO. Â The quilt that is closest to being a top in my Fair and Square quilt so I grabbed it and started in.
I am pretty far along with this one. Â I have all the blocks and borders done except the string blocks.
I am pretty excited to we working on this. Â Kelli made this quilt a couple years ago and I loved it.
So starts the mess string blocks make…but it’s oh so worth it.
Here’s how far I got….
I have 20 triangles finished but there’s 144 to make. Â I am making mine a size bigger adding a column.
I’m pretty content working on my strings. Â In the meantime I have that Virginia Bound quilt hanging over a chair-I am looking it as I sew blocks….trying to decide if I want to make a commitment to applique and big stitching it….right now, I’m leaning towards no…I’m not ambitious enough but we’ll see. Â I might give in and do it yet.
Stop back next week to see if I went back to Virginia Bound or if I stuck with Fair and Square.
I am patiently waiting for a quilt retreat in 2 weeks to put my Splendid Sampler quilt blocks together. In the meantine , I hope to finish a dress for my Grandbaby’s 1 st birthday. Apart from a few UFO’s to work on, I am most excited to look forward to October when I move, and can st up my quilting frame ( mid arm), and quilt my “crumb along with me” quilt top !
I like the fair and square triangles. Are they strips sewn together first and then cut?
Yes. Exactly how it’s done Carla.
As far as Virginia Bound goes, I’d probably just do the appliqué if I were you, then quilt it on the machine. I like a little hand work, but hand quilting drives me nuts!

I have gotten 142 star points made for sashings in Thanks to You and am working on prepping fabric for next week’s retreat/classes. I have worked for my SIL a lot more than I thought I would this summer, so I have not finished up UFOs like I expected. I will just keep plugging away a few minutes at a time and see what happens.
OH NELL! I am sooooo glad to hear that I am not the only one that doesn’t have my Thanks to You finished. I was a sewing fool earlier in the year and then hit a low spot and sewing didn’t happen. So looking forward to the retreat and getting my mojo back!
I do hand quilting for baby quilts only, and even then, just in certain cases.

I just need to put the binding on a wedding quilt for August 11 in NY. Then I will have no projects with a due date!! I can work on whatever I feel like. My friend gave me a barn quilt panel a few years ago. I ran across a pattern for a wall hanging that used the panel. So I hope to finish that next. It will be quick and easy. I also just started the Gypsy Wife pattern. Looking forward to working on that. I will also have to pick out a project from my UFO bucket to finish. I enjoy having several projects to work on!
Connie—I still have 101 blocks to make-but don’t feel bad, none of the Nebraska group from that retreat have it done. Lori has finished May Flowers, but she is the only one with a finish from last time. Hoping to get back into a groove once school starts. . .
I have Bonnie’s book with Virginia Bound in it. What is the appliqué you were thinking about doing? Maybe I missed the instructions for that.
Hi Paula. Re-read the post. The applique instruction are not in the book. Someone else tweaked the pattern.
what strip bucket did your 4 patches come from? – they look civil war
Yes. The scraps are from my Civil War Reproduction bucket.
