UFO Challenge Update

From now until Bonnie Hunter’s new book comes out in September you’ll find me right here on Wednesdays sharing my progress on a UFO (unfinished project).  My hope is to get some finished so I won’t feel guilty sewing on new projects from her new book.  It’s not to late to join in the fun.  You can find my first post about it here.  You can see my listing of all my Bonnie Hunter UFOs here.

So close…so, so close.

Over the weekend I decided to grab my Pineapple Crazy blocks and start sewing on them again.  We were headed back to Lacrosse for a doctor appointment and ripping off papers in the car is my favorite thing to do.  I needed more blocks done if I was going to rip papers….so away I went sewing.

I finished three that were started….Then I did six.  Great.  That would give me nine papers to rip along the way.  Awesome.

Then I decided to do a count and see how many I needed.  WOW.  Just six more.  Hmmm…it was Saturday night.  We were home. I could sleep in the next day.  I was going to do them.  I texted my friend Nell and told her I was almost done.

At 11pm I messaged Kelli and said, “I did it.”  WOW.  I was HAPPY…SO HAPPY!!!!!!!

So the next day I started ironing and trimming blocks.  I was happily going to count them up and show them off for today’s post.  Here are my piles…25 in each except for one pile.  That one only had fifteen.  That’s 185 blocks.  AH…look at them.

I had more…I had this stack.  The stack here I de-papered while I was recouping.  That’s 15 more.  I’m up to 200.  WOW.  They were so awesome to look at.

Then I got my stack of blocks that had paper.  I ironed them.  Then I counted them.  WHAT?!?!?!?  NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I only had 15.  Only 15 more blocks.  WHAT!

I looked.  I counted.  I looked and counted again.  UGH.

The truth hit me.  I wasn’t done.  I had 15 more blocks.  That would bring me to 215….I need 224.  That means I wasn’t done.  I need 9 more blocks.  Oh no.  Oh well.  I made 215.  I certainly can make 9 more.

I was off to find more tracing paper and off to find my master sheet so I could start sending the paper through my printer.  As I was doing that I was thinking about the papers and my miscount.  Then I remembered that I gave papers to a couple people last year at the quilting retreat.  I must have given 9 paper away.  I had forgotten about it.  That’s why when I was done with my stack of papers I thought I was done with the blocks.  I hope they got hooked on Pineapple Crazy too.

Make sure to check back here next week to see if I tackle those last nine blocks….Wouldn’t that be awesome?

  1. Love the blocks, can’t wait to see it finished. I don’t think it should be a miss at all; you were able to get 12 done, plus all the pressing and counting. It’s the small steps that make the most progress. Slow and steady wins the race!

  2. I feel your pain about the miscounted blocks. I recently did just that. I have started clipping my blocks together in sets of ten which has helped a lot.

I am working on Bonnie Hunter’s Allietare!, the 2015 Mystery Quilt. I kept up with the mystery as it unfolded, but when we saw the final reveal, my husband said he wanted this quilt for our king-size bed. I am making almost twice the number of original blocks. Last night I finished the additional Echoes of Pisa! (red and black and neutral) blocks. Now I am working on the extra Allietare Star! (gold, neutral, red, and black) blocks. For some reason, these extra blocks are going much faster than the original set I made in January.

Don’t be discouraged about those nine disappearing pineapple blocks. I am a CPA, and no matter how many times I calculate the pieces I need, and no matter how many times I count the pieces, I always wind up with 40 too many or 60 too few. I figure it is just part of the way I quilt. That’s me!

  4. I would never have the self control to do all the blocks first. I would be stitching them together in rows or 4’s as I finished them. Beautiful work.

  5. I just love Pineapple blocks! I make small ones for pincushions that I gift to my friends and donate to our guild boutique for sale. Your blocks are beautiful!

  6. I have the papers printed for that one, but I haven’t started it, so it doesn’t count as a UFO! :) I got to 205 of the 290 Rick Rack Nines blocks done. I need to cut more 2 inch squares, as my variety is getting pretty BLAH! I put my August UFO from All People Quilt into a top, and I got all of my Grand Illusion blocks finally done. I am hoping to have that into a top by the end of the day on Monday. . .yahooo! My family and I are headed to the Nebraska State Fair and I am going to be a white glove lady in the quilt exhibit on Saturday. I can’t wait to see all of the quilts. And almost time for the NEW BONNIE HUNTER BOOK!
