In my quest to clean up all of my UFOs, I stumbled into this partially finished tumbler quilt. Hmm.

Ah…I remember this. I finished a tumbler quilt that was Iowa Hawkeye themed. This one…It was donated to Ray who sent it to me. I just needed to do the longarming.

I finished it, and I donated it to a benefit.

When this was sent to me, it was pretty long for how wide it was. That led me to take off a few of the last rows. This is the leftover.

I saved it, thinking someday I’ll make another one. Well, I thought that someday could be now. I thought I would at least get the blocks cut, and I could always use it as a leader and ender or in between projects.
I had time, so I pulled my Iowa Hawkeyes fabrics…
I pulled out my tumbler block ruler too. I cut a few blocks…

…then as I was digging through the fabric, I found this…

Hmm. More leftovers I guessed.
Then I looked more closely. I started thinking that the two blocks weren’t the same size. Hmm.

I measured against the UFO. I was right. They were different sizes, and the size they are is NOT the size of my ruler.

Hmm. So…what to do? I think I might take the black polka dot block to the glass shop and have them cut a plexiglass template…or maybe I’ll just cut a cardboard one. In the meantime, I didn’t let that stop me from making some progress. Both tumbler blocks were 4 1/2″ tall, so for now, I cut some 4 1/2″ strips.

So friends…just a note. All Tumblers are not created equal.
I think I’ll be Scarlett and worry about it tomorrow. HA!! For now, I’m one step closer and that’s enough.

You seem to have a good start with this quilt. It is always so helpful to have fabric chosen and then to have the strips cut, even more helpful.
What I do for cardboard templates is to cut three and glue them together. Then it works almost like a plastic template. Its thicker and works better for me.
That’s a great idea for templates thanks!
Loved your commitment to an additional project Scarlet, uh, Jo. Got the idea fleshed out, do the work on it tomorrow. I love your Train Tracks. I would have never dreamed of that quilt in those colors. Now I’m excited about it. That was my favorite quilt in that book, just wish I could get past the plans and get it going. I take it you’re making a second version and I like that too. Inspiration!! Thanks!!
Oooh, I love the idea of having your own plexiglass templates cut!
Just read about your Tumbler leftovers! Hey cut the blacks ones to match your leftovers! Might not be possibe but an idea. I was cleaning or sorting I should say in my 2nd quilting storage room and found 2 huge collections of Hexie’s! Photo included…now they are two different sizes. One is EPP and the other is another way but just can’t think of the name…one of the mountion area though. Now I have more of a job…gonna try my best to work on those in the evening. Jo I wish I could produce like you do but I’m slower than I used to be…Of course at 80.5 years old, it’s all okay!
Have a wonderful day!
Sorry wouldn’t take photo!
Betty
The plexiglass template idea is something I never would have thought of. Please talk more about this. Cost? Was finding a shop that would do it hard?
