Try it on Tuesday: String Fling

Each Tuesday, I review a quilt product or try something new.  I often host giveaways too….Make sure to stop over each Tuesday to check  it out.

I am so excited that we have a new sponsor for “Try it on Tuesday”.  It’s Kansas City Star Quilts Pickledish division.  If you aren’t familiar with them, you will soon be after I do a few reviews of their books.  They are the publishers of my favorite quilt designer Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville.com.

Pickledish sent me a copy of Bonnie’s newest book, String Fling”  Scrappy, Happy and Loving It!

I think the book is wonderful.  Patterns for a  few of the quilts in the book  were released before the book was published either as a mystery quilt or as a magazine installment.  I have already made three quilts in the book.

Here is  my version of Roll Roll Cotton Boll.

RRCB-1

Here is my Orca Bay.

Ocra_Bay_Front

Here is my Jamestown Landing.

JTL-4

All three of these are in my top ten quilts that I have ever made.  With all those amazing quilt designs, one might think that the rest of the book is “duds”….NOT TRUE!  The rest of the book features more great quilts!  In fact, I have already started sewing two of them….

This is Pineapple Crazy….It is the only paper pieced quilt in the book.  Can you believe there are 224 blocks in the center and 60 more around the outside?    12,000 pieces in all….Amazing!

The other quilt I already started is Talking’ Turkey.

Other quilts from the book on my list to make are Pfefferneuse….

Blue Skies….

Santa Fe String Star…

Tulip Fields….

Wild Child….

and Zuckerwatte.

There are a total of 13 quilts in the book!  Someone once told me if she finds three quilts in a book that she really wants to make, then purchasing the book is a totally justified.  I think it’s a good philosophy….so this is a quilt book I would definitely purchase because there are more than three quilts I want to make.

Being I already have a copy of the book, I am giving this copy away….Do you want to win it?  You don’t need to follow me or like me on facebook (but you can), ….you don’t need to jump through a bunch of hoops.   All you need to do is leave a comment telling me which is you favorite quilt from the book…easy right.

I’ll pick a winner next week.  I’ll be back with a winner from last week’s giveaway tomorrow.

If you liked this book of Bonnie’s, I am sure you would like these as well.

Adventures with Leaders & Enders: Make More Quilts in Less Time!

Scraps & Shirttails II: Continuing the Art of Quilting Green

Scraps & Shirttails: Reuse, Re-pupose, Recycle! The Art of “Quilting Green”

I have all of them and honestly, if the house burned down tomorrow, these are the first four quilt books I would purchase!

  1. I just love Tulip Fields. That’s the first one I’ll make when I win the book (ha ha). I’m going to take a class with Bonnie tomorrow in Hershey Pa. We are making Crabapples from her Leaders and Enders book. She is my American Idol.

  2. I’d have to say Jamestown Landing which is the one I’d like to make next. But honestly thats not true I like all of them. I’ve made orca bay and roll roll cotton boll. Shirley

  3. My favorite is Jamestown Landing because it reminds me of my family history. Our family started and has remained in the Jamestown, VA, area since well before the Civil War. I just love visiting the area and hearing about the local history over and over. I just love the other quilts as well. I’m still plodding along on my Orca Bay. Thanks for this chance to win Bonnie’s book.

  4. I love all the patterns in this book. I would never be able to put it away until all have been made. I would love to win this book.

  5. So many beautiful quilts and to choose only one is difficult, but I will have to say Jamestown Landing is quite spectacular and. I love your color choices. Just beautiful! Thank you for this opportunity to win one of Bonnie’s books. She is one of my favorite quilt teachers! Thank you again!

  6. I’m in awe of Wild Child… hum, could I use up my ever expanding collection of triangles I’ve cut off from other projects. Wouldn’t that be great. I’m not up for the 12,000 piece quilt. But it looks wonderful. Thanks for sharing your bounty with us and showing pictures from the new book. I’m putting it on my Christmas Wish list!

  7. I am so excited that you are offering Bonnie’s book! I love her books – and your blog!!! As a girl from the Mid-west who now lives in the deep south, reading your blog gives me a little bit of home…. ahhhh… like a pair of old boots! Love Bonnie’s patterns and followed your Crumb-a-long. You do an excellent job!!!

  8. Thank you for the opportunity of winning one of Bonnie’s books. I am making the Orca quilt at the moment, and thank her for her generosity in sharing her talents. Living in Australia, I find the postage cost on top of the book is just too much for my pensioner pocket, but if I won the book, I think my first choice to make (like a lot of others) would be the pineapple quilt. It is just stunning.

  9. Turkey Tracks is my favorite. I hope to win. We are renovating an old house so I am on a budget. And I am trying to bust my stash. So good all around! Love your blog. Thanks.

  10. Blue Skies is speaking to me. Maybe because I’ve done a lot of blue string blocks since Orca Bay. I’d like to try it with an asymmetrical setting. Thanks Jo for the giveaway and all your inspiring work.

  11. Such a hard decision to pick just one. I think Talkin’ Turkey would be my favorite. I just bought a bunch of mens shirts at Goodwill and am looking forward to making several of Bonnie’s quilts. Thanks for the giveaway.

  12. Pineapple Crazy & Jamestown Landing are a couple of my favorites. Thank you for the chance to win Bonnie’s book.

  13. I am a Bonnie Hunter groupie. I live. Her quilts. I guess it’s the “use up your scraps” philosophy she sponsors. I made Pineapple Blossom and am working on My Blue Heaven, both free patterns on the quiltville Blog. I own Bonnie’s first three books so owning String Fling would be great. I really want to make the String Star and Jamestown Landing! Your finished quilts are gorgeous Jo. thank you for the opportunity to win Bonnie’s latest book.

  14. Bonnie has inspired me. I am saving strings and cutting up stash into 1 1/2″,2″ and 2 1/2″ strips. The pineapple crazy is calling to me. Thank you for the giveaway and I hope to win it. Phyllis

  15. I have already made the Orca Bay as a mystery quilt. I love them all, but the first one I am going to make from this book is “Talking Turkey”. I have been saving reds for a long time and now have the perfect quilt to use them on.

  16. There is nothing like looking forward to a “Bonnie” mystery, workshop…or new book! I would love this book! Jamestown Landing is one I would like to try soon…actually, as soon as I receive this fantastic book!

  17. I have all three of her previous books, and would love to win this one! Thanks so much for the opportunity, Jo.

I love all things Bonnie Hunter, but my favorite one in this book is Blue Skies.

Jo, I love yours and Kelli’s Perkimon and your red “Blue Heaven”.

    Beth

  18. The quilt I like is the Santa Fe String Star. I like string quilts, fun to look at the different fabrics and remember what piece of clothing you had made from it.
Thank You for giving the book away would be fun to win.

  19. Country Junction is a amazing site, wonderful to see some of the quilts featured in Bonnie Hunter’s Spring Fling featured. How kind of you to offer the “extra”: book to one of us, My favorite you have done is Roll Roll Cotton Boll….the scraps you have used make it look so patriotic. I love, love, love the simplicity of this quilt although reading comments from quilters it is lovely, but takes some time.

Should I be the lucky winner, out would come all those scraps and I would do my best to duplicate your Cotton Boll….it is outstanding!

  20. I recently had classes with Bonnie and was lucky enough to see many of the quilts
up close! Love Jamestown landing and Talkin turkey. Would love to have the book. It wasn’t out yet at class time. Thanks, Patti

  21. Turkey Tracks is my favorite of all though am totally excited over ALL the new quilts Bonnie shows in her latest book. I’ve got it on my birthday Wish List from the kids .. am sooo hoping they get it for me or I will definitely get it myself …. UNLESS I win one!

    Karen

  22. I’ll be meeting Bonnie and having 3 days of classes with her next week, including Turkey Tracks! But I think my favorites…can’t pick one darn it…would be Jamestown Landing (especially since your dog is looking so pert on there!) and Pineapple Crazy as it fascinates me! I’ll be checking in from VA to see if I’ve won! Kathy O

  23. All are wonderful, but think my favorite is Blue Skies.
Would love to win Bonnie’s book. I took the Pineapple class from her several years ago on her first visit to VA.

  24. My favorite is Orca Bay by far! I have already made it in Packer green and gold! I also made RRCB! I want to make several more…starting with Zucckerwatte and Talking Turkey!

  25. I really appreciate your generosity. I have not yet ordered the book because I am still working on quilting RRCB. It would be great to win it.

  26. I don’t think there is a quilt of Bonnie’s that I don’t like. It would be so hard to choose. I think Pfefferneuse would be my first choice in this new book.

  27. Jo-

Thanks for sharing the photos. I have Bonnie’s other 3 books and this one looks like a great book too!

It’s hard to pick just one quilt, but the Talking Turkey especially appeals to me. I’d do it in reds just like the photo.

    Louise

  28. oh my goodness! I’m loving the Sante Fe Sring Star; but, I would probably choose a different color than red. I think my favorite would be Pineapple Daisies though!

Thank you for a chance to win!

  29. This is so nice of you to do. Orca Bay is the only one of Bonnie’s I’ve made so far. Jamestown Landing is #1 on my to do list at this moment! I fell in love with it after seeing yours.

  30. Would love to be the one to recieve this wonderful book……..Have always admired Bonnie and her accomplisments so much !

  31. It is hard to choose a favorite. I think it might be Orca Bay. I have made a couple of Bonnie’s mystery quilts but I sat that one out. I am thinking I would love to have the book and finally get around to making it as well as others in the book.

Thanks for the possibility of winning this book!

  32. Oh What a Lovely Book – just look at that cover — Would love to make Zukerwatte –
first – then a lot of the other also . Bonnie is such a talented and generous person.
    Thanks for the chance!!!!!

  33. They all look amazing but my favorite is Roll Roll cotoon Boll. Like you i have made and loving it. I would also like to make Talking Turkey.

  34. While i’m intrigued by the pineapple quilt (& i have plenty of scraps), I really like Turkey Tracks. I work for a large poultry company & i’m always drawn to the chicken/turkey patterns.

    Thanks

  35. I love her designs! I never knew there were so many ways to use old shirts and scraps; but because of Bonnie I know I am able to imagine ( I haven’t finished a quilt yet) great quilts. It has to be Orca Bay as my favourite.

  36. Gosh, the Santa Fe String Star looks great–and I can imagine it in so many different fabrics with different “moods”. Thanks for the giveaway, and for the peeks at your gorgeous quilts.

  37. Love all of Bonnie’s stuff! Please sign me up for your drawing. I’m still working on crumb blocks inspired by your Crumb Along. Thanks for your great blog!

  38. Jamestown Landing is at the top of my wish list from this recent book from Bonnie. I love it!! :) I also have her other 3 books, and like you said, “If the house burned down, these would be the first books I’d buy to replace!” they are all so great!

Thanks for the chance to win!
    Love from Indiana, ~bonnie

  39. I would love to win. I’ve made “Orca Bay” and have started “Roll Roll Cotton Boll”. I would make “Pfeffernusse” next then “Jamestown Landing”. Thanks for the chance.

  40. How generous of you to share your extra copy of Bonnie’s “String Fling”. Hope I’m the winner.

Your website is fun and your quilts are outstanding. Love to see perfectly executed quilts.

  41. I love all her quilts and have made all her mystery quilts . It is just amazing how you look at things differently when you use multiple fabrics in the same color family. I love Talking Turkey !! I was surprised how many reds I have collected, must be channeling my mom !! That one is on my list to make

  42. I love Bonnie’s quilts and would love to win the book. Scrape quilts are my kind of quilts.
Thanks for the chance to win.

  43. I love Bonnie Hunter’s scrap quilts. My favorite would be Talking turkey. Thanks for the opportunity to win. Karen

  44. My absolute favorite is Orca Bay which I am working on just now. When this quilting mystery was running, I was waaaay too unsure if I could really do a mystery like that, so I had been waiting until it was revealed, then took a while to gather my fabrics and now the sewing machine is humming.

But then again – all the other quilts in this book are so darling as well.
I think my next project has to be Blue Skies – so I really neeeeed this book.

Oh, and then again… I bought a huge bag full of scraps today at a fabric market… now that this post brought “Pineapple Crazy” back on my mind, I know what to do with those scraps… (oh no… this will be a looooooong project I guess…)

Anyway: Thanks for the chance to win Bonnie’s book and thanks for trying out Pineapple Crazy and telling us about how addictive it is ;)

  45. YIKES!! How did I miss this one!! I am a BONNIE FAN….love her quilts!! Talking Turkey and the one I can’t pronounce or spell…love them…and of course All the others are my favourite!! Thanks for the chance!!
    Paulette Whew!

  46. Wow, that books looks awesome. One I definitely needs to add to my quilt library. It is so hard to choose just one, but I do like Pfefferneuse. I have so many scraps that I could really make some beautiful quilts with the addition of this book. Thanks for the chance to win.

  47. Oh my! If I need to pick it will have to be Pineapple Crazy…I have so many scraps to use- this would definately help!

  48. I love Pineapple crazy because of the bright colors and would love to try it. I am still working on my Orca Bay quilt. I love Bonnie Hunter’s designs and her use of scraps, no matter how small. Thanks for having a drawing for the book.

  49. If had the book I would make pfefferneuse as my first quilt. I love the German cookie and am sure the the quilt pattern is just as scrumptious! Thank you for offering this book as a giveaway.

  50. Orca Bay for me – I loved watching Bonnie release it through her mystery last year and someday plan to join in one of her mysteries. Thanks for the giveaway!

  51. I really like the Pineapple Crazy quilt! It is beautiful! I just love all of Bonnie Hunters scrappy quilts. I hope I win. Jane

  52. Long time admirer of Bonnie and have her other books. All the quilts are lovely, but today Talking Turkey is my favorite. (How are you coming with getting her to Olwein in 2015? We went through there yesterday and I now know I can make it there from se Iowa where we had a sprinkle last night!)

  53. I really liked making the string blocks in Orca Bay quilt. My next favorite would be Jamestown Landing. I would love to make all thirteen of them; where, oh, where, is the time?
    Thanks,
    Anita B.

  54. Absolutely love Jamestown Landing.!! I have wanted to make it since I saw yours completed. I would truly love a copy of the book and make my own. Love, love, love your blog. Thanks for the chance for the book.

  55. It was so much fun sewing the strings for Orca Bay. My next favorite in the book would be Jamestown Landing. Such a calming quilt, which I probably need. Enjoy reading your blog.
    Thanks,
    Anita B.

  56. Hi Jo!! I am just setting up my sewing space. It is the first time, that I have had a room, that was not located next to the water heater since we have been married!! It will be 30 years this August. I am following Bonnie’s scrap method, and only going to put prewashed fabrics into this space. When cutting, I am going to add to the scrap boxes in the precut sizes that work best for me. My fabric has been stored in many places–so will be nice to know it will all be sorted and clean. I want to finish making the Orca Bay quilt I started with Bonnie’s mystery quilt.

  57. Isn’t that like saying which child is your favorite? I love Bonnie’s patterns, and have done many and have many ‘in progress’-(aka-UFOs…) but if I must…Jamestown Landing, Turkey tracks, Zuckerwatte…
Thanks for the give away. I haven’t gotten around to buying to book yet, but will soon if I dont “win”!

  58. I love the Pineapple quilt, makes me want to start another one.
One of these days I going to finish my Orca bay, the ones I have quilted are really pretty.

    Judy

  59. I would tell you which was my favorite, but alas my copy hasn’t arrived yet. I do have all of her previous books and love them all. So I’ll just cross my fingers that I can win the book since Wednesday is my birthday.
