Today’s the Day! Orca Bay Mystery!

I have gotten a couple emails from people wondering if I know about Bonnie Hunter’s newest mystery quilt Orca Bay.  If you are a regular blog reader you know I am a Bonnie Hunter fan.  People have been wondering why I haven’t said anything on the blog, if I am making the quilt or if I’ve pulled fabric for the mystery….

Here’s the answers.  Yes.  I know about Bonnie Hunter’s new mystery quilt.  The first clue comes out TODAY!!  Yes.  I am going to make it.  No I haven’t pulled fabric for it.  Let me explain….

First off, Bonnie’s quilts are scrap quilts.  I use Bonnie’s Scrap Users System.  For people who use the system, there really isn’t a lot of need to “pull” fabric, at least not if fabric is organized like mine is.   When Bonnie gives the instructions, she might say to cut 640-2.5″ red triangles.  I’ll grab my rotary cutter, mat,  easy angle ruler and my 2.5″ scrap bucket and cut from there first.

There’s my strip boxes….ready and waiting to be used.  Yep…I know they are mess.  That’s okay.  That means I have been using my fabric.  :)  When I’ve used everything from my scrap box, I’ll head over to my red fabric drawer…most of it is fat quarters or half yard cuts.   I’ll cut the rest from there.

Red-fabric

I have a drawer like this for reds, blues, neutrals, greens and yellows and purples together, then brown and blacks together.   I really don’t have gobs of fabric.  It’s a healthy balance of fabric moving in and out.

I didn’t even consider making my quilt any colors except the ones Bonnie suggested….reds, blues, neutrals and blacks.  Bonnie hasn’t let me down in her color selection yet so I’m going with her colors…besides, they are all colors I like.

Some people wonder how people have time to quilt at this time of year…the holidays, family and all is oh so busy.  Me, it’s the perfect time to quilt.  I have used past mysterys (Roll, Roll Cotton Ball, Carolina Christmas) as a reason to keep sewing and that keeps the stress of  holidays away.  So thanks in advance Bonnie….your mystery quilt is just what I need…stress free sewing.   If you want to join in on the mystery, head on over to Bonnie’s blog,  Quiltville’s Quips and Snips.

  1. Yes I am joining in, no more watching and wishing I had joined. but I will have to wait to start as, my special rulers to come in the mail. Like you, I will raid the scrap system draws.

  2. I have plans to download all the parts but just can’t commit right now—too many other projects in the queue. I use Bonnie’s scrap system too but on a much smaller scale at present–but it sure works well!

I want every fabric in your RED bin :)
