The 50 Cent Quilt Top

So last week, I told about a quilt top I bought at the thrift store for 50 cents. If you missed the blog post, you can read it HERE. This is a reminder of what it looked like.

I mentioned in the blog post that I was thinking about trying to find the background fabric and adding a narrow border on the quilt, then getting a fabric from the line and adding a border. As is, it is 56 1/2″ x 56 1/2″. I’d like it a little bigger. I will finish this and donate it. In general, I think bigger quilts bring more money.

A kind blog reader said the pattern is from Kim Diehl’s book, Simple Charm. You can find it HERE.

In the book, the quilt has a brown background.

I had someone contact me saying they were sure the fabric line was from Buggy Barn and was called Bramble Berries Stars and Words. They even directed me to THIS site.

Here are the two background prints that are available. Sadly, I don’t think either is what I need. UGH.

I knew it wasn’t the one on the right. The one on the left had possibilities. But, I don’t think it’s it. It is definitely the same design…but, look. Mine had an almost golden background. What I see on the screen is almost cream. The one on the screen had gold and blue stars. Mine had cream and blue stars.

Bummer. It’s the right fabric line, but I don’t think it’s the right color. You all know how a fabric line has a print, but they make it in three different colors? I think it’s one of those situations. They don’t have the color I need.

The fabric company that has this still has these two prints…

So I thought my problem was solved, but I don’t think it is.

I received a comment from a reader saying they sent me a message via email, but I looked everywhere and couldn’t find it.

So, if I can’t find some of the background fabric, should I add a border anyway?? Hmm. I just don’t know.

It is pretty as is…But I really do think it would make a better benefit quilt if it were a little bigger. Leave a comment and let me know what you think. I’d love some other opinions besides mine.

    1. Hi Jo
If you go to One Sister Design Janet uses gold alot in her lines of fabric. There is a basic gold that might work for you! Hope this helps!

    2. Soft yellow 2″ border, than a deep cranberry, maybe prints in “Simple pieced pattern”, so as not to take away from pattern center.

  1. I suggest that you add a border or two and finish it for donation. I know you will figure out the perfect finish.

    1. I would try to find a fabric in a color that matches the shade of the background and add a small border, then finish up with the wider burgandy piece in the line as the outer border.

  2. Personally, I would put a border or two on it, it’s too busy and looks a little unfinished as it is, I think

  3. Yes to the border. Maybe take an inspiration from the original pattern and use a brown for the border.

  4. I would also add a border as I think it looks a bit unfinished without one– maybe a narrow border and then a wider one.

  5. I would definitely add a border. It doesn’t have to be the background fabric. Pick a color from one of the blocks and get something similar. It’s going to be very pretty. Hugs,

  6. I agree with you that bigger quilts bring more money.
I would find a close neutral color and add a thin border. Then another fabric in a color from the quilt to add a second wider border. You could use a solid color so it doesn’t have to be from the same line. The recipient will love it any way you finish it. :)

  7. I think a narrow inner border and a wider outer border would be nice to increase the size and make the quilt more useable and appealing. Quilt designers tend to have a similar color pallet across most of their lines, so you could probably find a fabric from a more recent Kim Diehl collection to work with your top.

  8. Your pictures from the quilt top you bought vary a lot on screen depending on your lighting. Top pic looks cream and bottom pic looks gold. I think it is the cream as usually you wouldn’t have 3 colors so similar in a collection, especially when there is also a teal.

  9. I agree to add borders. Would the green print work as inner and red print as outer borders? Or versa vice?

  10. Hi, I was the person who told you to look in your email. Perhaps I don’t have the right email address? Anyway, I have the fabric in yet another colorway, aqua. And I have 2 yards of the aqua. I sent my email on 5/5 if that helps you look. Just pop me an email if you want the aqua. It might work for the outer border. I can send you a clipping if you wish.

  11. Borders of piano keys, pyramids, or rectangles set end-to-end seem to complement large snowballs the best. If you have enough scraps in matching colors of similar style fabric, I don’t think it will matter that they aren’t from the same fabric line.

  12. Will any of these work? Type in for eBay search:

eBay store is listed as The Heart of Sewing 100% positive US $8.50
