Surgery for Ruby on Tuesday

I am back from the vet with Ruby in tow.  She is just not her perky, happy self.

Ruby-2

If you are reading about the Ruby’s adventure for the first time in this post, go back and read the posts that took place earlier to understand the whole story…this is just an update.

After talking to the vet, this is what I learned.  The “bits”, food with dye in it that can be seen on x-rays, made it through her stomach and stopped.  They did not travel through her intestine as they were supposed to.  The vet said they will x-ray again in the morning but unless some miracle happens, plan on surgery.  Abdominal surgery is a harder surgery than being spayed so I am to plan a longer recovery.

I asked for a prognosis.  I was told that it was really impossible to tell until they got inside.  They had a dog that swallowed a ketchup cup from McDonalds.  The sides of the cup shredded and ripped the intestine and they had to put the dog to sleep.  There can be all sorts of things wrong and causing the blockage.  There is no real way to know until they open her up.

For now we are just giving her water and snuggling.  She had a stressful day as she isn’t a fan of car rides and the vet is a half hour drive each way.

Ruby has a blemish on her lip and I asked about that.  The vet said at this point, let’s just see how the surgery goes.  UGH…that didn’t sound very good to me….I’m really sad.

  1. So sorry to hear Miss Ruby is not well. My rookie goes tomorrow for leg surgery. I stepped on her leg… I feel terrible. Prayers for both our furry family members.

  2. So sorry to hear of Ruby’s medical woes. I hope everything goes well. I’m sure lots of hugs will be required.

  3. OMG–look at those eyes–don’t they just break your heart!? I am praying that they open her up and find it is nothing. We went through this with one of our cats. Something was showing up on the xray. However, when they went in-there was nothing! I hope it is something like that for your baby. Is it possible she ate any ribbon or things in your craft room? Please keep us posted.

  4. Saying prayers for Ruby and the family. It is so hard to watch your little furry friends be uncomfortable and not be able to tell you what it is.

  5. Praying for you and Ruby. Our pets really are family members and we love them so much. I hope she has good results from her surgery and is up and romping around soon.

  6. She looks so sad. Give her a big hug. I’m praying for her, you and your family. We have 3 dogs so I completely understand what you are going through.

  7. Oh Jo. I am so sorry. Beagles are notorious for eating anything and everything. We try so hard to watch our beagle, Brody, so he doesn’t eat any non-food item but he still manages to ingest the craziest things. Sending prayers to you and Ruby.

  8. So sorry :-( Our Boston ate a bunch of pea gravel that caused a blockage. Luckily he was able to pass it as he was not a candidate for surgery. When I your first post about Rubyit reminded me of his behavior at that time. Sosorryto hear it is the same issue. Ruby is young and will bounce back I’m sure. Sending good thoughts.

  9. We had a St. Bernard who ate a bobbin off the sewing machine and had to have surgery. Sending prayers up that Ruby will come through the surgery with flying colors and will be back to her normal “perky” self in short order.

  10. I am so sorry that you and Ruby are having to go through this. I will be thinking about you and hope to get a good report tomorrow.

  11. Poor Ruby! I’m hoping her surgery goes well and she’s soon back to her old self. Our cat was sick a little over a week ago and DH let him outside early on the Wed. morning before I could take him to the vet. Of course he disappeared and since he doesn’t hear much of anything anymore it wouldn’t do any good to call him. I was sure we’d never see him again, but when I came home from work on the Thurs. night there he was in the garage and he let me know he was HUNGRY. I have no idea what was wrong, but he’s fine now.

  12. You, your family and Ruby are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope that all goes well tomorrow and she will recover quickly. Thanks for keeping us up to date.

  13. oh, Jo sorry to read about Ruby and what she is going through. Hoping all goes well tommorow, I know how you feel, lots of doggie hugs for Ruby.

  14. Jo, I’ll be praying. That’s the best medicine we can provide from our end. May the Lord guide the doctor’s hands in finding the cause and then the cure for little Ruby. She looks so much like my grand-dog Rambo with identical facial coloring! Such sweet tempered dogs, too.

  15. Awe, this is when you wish they could talk and tell you where it hurts. Prayers to Ruby and your family. It’s so hard to go through these experiences when you don’t know what to expect. :(

  16. Will be thinking of Ruby and your family today hoping that all news is good news and she is soon on her way back to her perky little self.

  17. I’m sending my prayers and BIG hugs, your way. She looks so sad and pitiful, please give her plenty of hugs from me. Keep us updated if you can, I’ll be thinking of Ruby and sending good thoughts today. ;-> Toni Anne

Sorry about your puppy. I hope she fares well. One of my black labs was feeling badly a couple of years ago, took him to the vet and he had a blockage. After a couple of days surgery was performed and my wonderful vet removed 15 stones from his intestines. He recovered fully and we keep an eagle eye on him and his eating habits! He still tries to nibble on stones occassionally!

  20. Oh, Jo, I’m so sorry Ruby and you are going through this. I am saying prayers for Ruby and for you and family. And I’m keeing positive thoughts that everything is going to be just fine. Many hugs.

  21. Jo I am so sorry to hear that Ruby is under the weather. I have dogs and sometimes they are such stinkers about eating things that they should not. Let’s pray that the blockage will be easily taken care of and she will be on the mend in no time.

  22. Oh no! Poor Ruby I am so sorry that this is happening. We had a cat that ate several things he shouldn’t have and had to have surgery. He came through fine and is still doing well, I am hoping the same for Ruby. Your family and Ruby will be in my thoughts and prayers.

  23. I’m so sorry to hear the vet visit didn’t go well. Hope the surgery will go well. will think of you and Ruby often.

  24. Thinking of you and Ruby. I know from experience, it just rips your heart out when they don’t feel well. And unlike a little kid, they can’t tell you what hurts.
