A shirt fest happened in my kitchen. It’s TERRIBLY MESSY but I don’t care. I’ve been having fun.
This is the kitchen island. You can’t see what I’m doing but I’m cutting out several quilts at once. I’ve been wanting and wanting to make a couple shirt quilts again but had put it off because of the mess. No more. It’s time to get messy.
I’m cutting pieces for Bonnie Hunter’s Sugar Bowl blocks….I’m cutting 3 1/2″ strips for Bonnie Hunter’s Tumalo Trail quilt. I’m also cutting those little churn blocks.
I’m also cutting extra strips. If I pick up a piece of shirt fabric I cut until it’s gone. I’m stripping up as much as I can.
I’m doing pretty good on my little churn dash blocks. If you’re curious how to make them I wrote a tutorial of sorts yesterday and it will post here tomorrow morning…so far, 47 are finished and in my pile.Aren’t they the cutest?
I’ve learned through experimenting that I like the ones with a medium colored background or even a dark background better then the ones that have a super light background. I’m going to continue to do some of each but I am going to make more like the ones in the photo below.
I really do love these….I need 162 so I hope I am still loving them after I make more than 100 more. I think I will!!
Onto the String Challenge:
Well I did one thing for the string challenge part of things. It was little progress but progress is progress right?
I cut more batik strings. My string collection was lacking.
It’s about time to start in on making string blocks for my Daylilies quilt. That’s messy and my little churn dash blocks take up quite a bit of machine space so I might have to move one of the projects to an alternate machine.
I’ll be back here next week on Monday. I’m hoping I’ll have Pineapple Crazy on my quilting frame. Dare I hope?
For those of you following along you know that I’m trying to make ALL of the quilts in Bonnie Hunter’s book String Fling. I need to quilt Pineapple Crazy and then I have two more left.
Hi Jo the link for the Churn Dash Blogs doesn’t work. You don’t have anything on the blog for yesterday about the blocks.
sorry…misprint. It will be here tomorrow morning.
I love churn dash blocks . And I agree with you on the ones with the medium and dark backgrounds. Have you ever made Bonnie Hunter’s chunky churndash?? It’s fun and easy.
Loved making Chunky Churndash and am planning on a second one. I also started making the Churn Dash blocks, but only have 6 done. I love the scrappy ones from the original picture you posted. I will have to look at throwing some of the medium ones in just to add some interest. Quilted a grad gift and a baby gift over the weekend and got bindings made and on. Finally going to quilt My Blue Heaven next.. .probably won’t happen until Friday night unless I get started tonight.
Love the little blocks, but I keep looking at the red and blue one and think something is not right with it. Am I correct?
Jeanine – you are correct, but it is cute. at least she turned them all wrong, I usually only do it to one corner
Your churn dashes are adorable…so many and so small!! Jeanine caught it out, the red/grey churn dash in the 4th picture, lower right, the center strip has the colors switched round so it doesn’t make a churn dash.
Loved the star block in Quiltmaker Mag this time.
