Stash Report Sunday….

Oh I wish I were able to report that I have fabric out but, alas, I don’t.  Trust me, I have been sewing.  I have been sewing like a mad woman but being I don’t don’t count fabric out until the last stitch of the binding is finished, there is nothing to report.  I can show you this….

pineappleblossoms

The borders are FINALLY all on my Pineapple Blossom quilt.  It  needs a backing to be pieced together and off to the quilt machine it is going.

I do have a little issue with this quilt though….I have measured and measured and read and re-read all of the directions.  I have looked and compared my quilt with the original pattern here but I can not figure out why my quilt is larger than the original. It’s a Bonnie Hunter pattern that I started when my daughter Kelli and I went to see Bonnie in Storm Lake, Iowa, this summer.  Her quilt is 76.5″ x 76.5″. It is in a 6 x 6 layout.  I used two inch strips to make mine.  My inner light colored border is 2.75″ wide and the outer border is 5″ wide….My quilt is 87.5″ x 87.5″.  I can’t figure out how my quilt can be 11″ wider than the original.  Here’s a link to the original quilt.

If one of you quilting sleuths are out there and can figure this out, PLEASE let me know how it happened.   I would love to know…

  1. Your quilt turned out really beautiful. I see that your quilt has a sawtooth border that Bonnie’s doesn’t have. Don’t know if that would make up all of the difference in size, but it’s a start.

  2. Perhaps when Bonnie did her math, instead of measuring the quilt she forgot to double the size of the borders, i.e. top and bottom to get her finished size. I always think bigger is better and so do the kids.

  3. I love your Pineapple Blossoms. I think part of the difference is your half-square triangle border. I don’t see that on Bonnie’s quilt.
    Your “used” numbers are great!

  4. The quilt is beautiful! And a little extra is just more to cuddle, right?

I crunched some numbers – are your blocks 9.5″ finished, instead of 9″ perhaps? 4 – 1.5″ strips plus a 3″ square should have made 9″ finished blocks. But if I add 1/2 inch to each of your block sizes, I get exactly the size you have.

  5. Her math must be off. If you add up her quilt going across, it comes out larger. The middle is 64.5 inches before any borders.

  6. Jo, I just added up the measurements on Bonnie’s quilt that she has the measurements underneath and I think she has the numbers transposed. Just the pineapple blocks and their sashing comes to 68″. Then when you add all those borders and the half-square border you are surely going to get more than another 5″on each side. I think yours is the correct measurement. You’ll have to write to Miss Bonnie and have her correct hers!

  7. My Orange Crush turned out bigger than the pattern said too, even though I followed the direction exactly. I like nice big quilts so I don’t care. Just saying.

  8. Guestimating – here is what I come up with using finished sizes for her quilt – blocks 9 X 6 = 54; sashing 1.5 X 7 = 11.5; inner white border 2.25 X 2 = 4.5; pieced border 2.5 X 2 = 5; outer border 5.5 X 2 = 11; completed quilt size 86 w/o binding. I’d say your quilt is the correct size and not the stated finished size from her website.

  9. I could be wrong…but I think you added seam allowance to the raw sizes in the pattern – I’m working with *finished* sized. See if I’m right….but it’s only my opinion :-)

    9″ x 6 blocks
    = 54″ + 1.5″ sashing (x 7 [5 between the blocks and 2 on the outside]), so 9.5″
    = 63.5″ + 1.5″ inner border (x 2 [left & right])
    = 66.5″ + borders (5″x 2[left & right])
    =76.5
