Rick is kind of sneaky. All in a good way. The other night when Kelli and the kids were over for their last sleepover before school started, Rick disappeared. I thought he went to the bathroom and then lost track of him. Kelli and I were stitching and watching flosstube.
After a bit, I went to the bathroom and saw he was cooking. I asked what he was making, and he said a sheet cake. Then I saw him pour hot frosting over what looked to me like a pan of bars, not a sheet cake. I kind of thought it was weird and even more weird to be making something at 8 pm at night, but oh well, at least I wasn’t cooking. HA!
About 10 minutes later, Rick came out with one of the bars. I was warm and wonderful. All my thoughts on pouring hot frosting on a pan of bars was gone. These were WONDERFUL!!

Everyone liked them.
In fact, Kelli’s kiddos liked them so much that Kelli asked if she could take some home. I said yes because it would be hard for Rick and me to eat that big of a pan.
Goodness, these were good. They kind of remind me of a cosmic brownie. I would definitely call them a brownie, but Rick’s family knows the dessert as a sheet cake.

The next day, Kelli called me. She asked for the recipe. Georgia had eaten the last brownie, and Eli was having a fit. Kelli was going to make a batch for their house.

Rick isn’t a nut fan so he omitted them.
Here are Kelli’s kids enjoying them in the garage the night Rick made these.

Truly…these are a chocolate lover’s delight…and key to the recipe is spreading the hot frosting over the top. It does set up after a couple hours. I should have learned by now that if Rick is in the kitchen, I just need to trust that whatever he makes will be good.

Yummy! And I would even bet that he cleans up after himself in the kitchen!
I make that same recipe and it is delicious!! My recipe also calls it a sheet cake. I have similar recipe that is titled, Texas Sheet cake. They are both so yummy! I often take to reunion because it is big.
Yep, got that recipe from a friend and it was titled “Texas Sheet Cake!”
That is what we call it too!
It looks like what I made years ago called Texas Sheet Cake. I prefer chopped pecans on it because we are pecan fans here. How lucky are you Jo? Darn lucky to have a guy cook and bake for you.
I’m in Northeast Texas and it’s a very popular recipe here. Texas Sheet Cake with fudge frosting . So, so good! Also, one even sweeter is the Mississippi Mud cake with mini marshmallows scattered on the top of the cake before baking. After done you pour the hot frosting over the top and it spreads out the marshmallows. Add chopped pecans to cake and top of frosting, yum!
Rick is a keeper! You won the lottery Jo ❤️
Texas sheet cake
Sounds like my $300 cake recipe, except it’s in a 9×13 pan, so good!!
I’ve called that a Texas Sheet Cake too like some commenters. The recipe is very popular online and Pinterest. I also make it in a 15” x 11” jelly roll pan. My recipe also calls for pouring hot frosting over cake. I love pecans, so I do add those to the icing. I’ve seen a recipe on Pinterest called Vanilla (white) Sheet Cake, if there are folks who don’t eat chocolate, but I haven’t tried it.
Boy, Jo, this guy is a keeper! My husband also likes to cook and I have no complaints.
I also call this Texas Sheet Cake. But I’m going to try Rick’s recipe. Such a good recipe when you have a crowd. Of course, at my house we just divvy it up and put it in the freezer. :)
It’s called a Texas Sheet Cake, the recipe has been around for decades. My Mom used to make it when we were kids. It’s delicious!
My recipe card calls it Texas Sheet Cake but my family calls it Funeral Cake. It’s fabulous with a little bit of vanilla ice cream.
Yummy! I think that’s what’s commonly called a Texas Sheet Cake. Don’t ask me why Texas, except maybe because it’s so big? I used to make these for the Cub and Boy Scouts. There is a blonde version, too.
Could you share the blonde version too, please? Thank you in advance.
Here in Ohio it’s called Texas Sheet Cake as well. The absolute best cake in the world if you ask me.
I’m so glad you found Rick.
It’s a great recipe and my handwritten Kansas version is called Governor’s Sheet Cake. Probably was a favorite of one of the Governors here. One of the easiest cakes to make.
Well, Texas sheet cake is the winner but whatever it’s called, it look delish and I’m going to try it! :-)
Love and prayers
Long story- will try to make it short. Many years ago when my grandmother died, my aunt’s neighbor brought food for after the ceremony. Best cake I had ever eaten (and, although I was about 14 or 15 at the time, I am a chocolate fanatic!) I asked my aunt if she could PLEASE get me that recipie! Shortly thereafter in the mail I received “Bev Weaver’s chocolate cookie sheet cake”. Guess what? Same cake. So, evidently, the Bevs of the world know good stuff when they see it! Who knew? And, I still make it +/- 60 years later!
I love Texas Sheet cake. My Aunt always made it for summer birthdays. I have started making 1/2 a recipe since there are only 2 of us in the house now.
Agree, it’s a Texas Sheet Cake. After seeing that the cake and frosting uses a total of 1.5# of butter (not to mention a LOT of sugar) I think we know what makes it taste so good, lol. All the fat molecules on your tongue is a pleasant sensation that adds to the flavor experience. I’m going to find the vanilla version of the cake. It should end up tasting a bit like a buttermilk pound cake. Yum!
I have been making the same cake for over 40 years. Someone brought it to us with a meal when I had my first baby. In our house it’s become “the” birthday cake.
Our version has cinnamon in the cake batter and is baked in a metal 9 x 13 pan. Best cake ever!
Rick is a keeper.
Sounds like you found a keeper Jo! :) for so many reasons! So happy for you ❤️
With all your baking, I’m surprised you’ve never made a Texas Sheet Cake. It’s so easy, and one of my hubby’s favorites.
