WOW…did you get to see all the picture of the great Quilt Square Quilt Along blocks from earlier today? Keep checking back as more bloggers add their squares.
Now that the January block is finished, some of you are probably wondering what the February block is. Well wonder no more….Check out the Bear Paw block at the bottom of Lori Smith’s Quilt Square Quilt Along pattern #1.
If tiny pieces are your idea of fun, you’ll love this one. If you are scheduling time, this block will take a little bit longer than the January block did but it’s well worth your time. Here’s my two blocks.
This one was made with my leftovers from my Cheddar and Blue Moda Bake Shop quilt. All of the fabric are from leftover jelly roll pieces from the Morris and Company fabric line.
I love this block and can’t wait to finish it up. Lucky for you, Lissa over at Moda, sent a layer cake for one of our prizes for the January participants.
My next block was made with all reds from my scrap bucket. I had some leftover bonus triangle from a previous project that were 1.5″ so I sorted through them and pulled out the red ones to use in my block.
Both of my blocks are completely and totally scrappy. I wanted to try something different from the pattern to show you some different options. Keep in mind you can puts light prints where dark prints are. In the Morris and Company block I changed things up a bit that way.
Last month I pasted along a couple tips for making your block. This month I am going to remind you again…check your quarter inch seam and make sure it is accurate. The next tip, all of those little half square triangles that you are creating are going to have little corners (often referred to as “dog ears”) hang off. Clip those off. It only takes a second to clip them and when it comes time to sew the pieces together, it will be much easier.
When quilting your blocks, I highly recommend using a very light weight batting. I used leftover scraps from my Moda Bake Shop quilt. It’s Dream Cotton Select batting from My Fabric Nook. (You can sign up to win a package of batting here) When working with small pieces the lowest loft of batting works so nice.
Now you are probably wondering about prizes for the January Participants.
As I mentioned before, Moda is giving away one Morris and Company layer cake. It’s designed by Barbara Brackman and I love the fabric.
Country Threads is giving away a pack of 24 fat eighths prefect for upcoming Quilt Square blocks. If you don’t win but want one, you can find a bundle here.
Ackfeld Manufacturing is giving away a star quilt holder. They make a variety of small quilt holders and hangers. If you look at the photos of the January blocks that have a quilt stand, most of those stands are made by Ackfeld. You can find them on the internet here.
THANKS to all of our wonderful sponsors. On Wednesday I will take all of the people who sent in a photo and all of the bloggers who linked up to today’s linky party showing their completed January blocks and number them. If you missed getting your photo in, you can post it on my Facebook page. I will use a random number generator and pick three winners. I will announce the winners on Wednesday. I am working on prizes for February too.
So get working on those Bear Paw blocks. We will have our big reveal on Wednesday, February 29th….if you are sending in a photo, please email it to me a day or two in advance. It takes a bit to get them all together and posted…If you have any questions email me here. rogjok@iowatelecom.net
