Quilt Finish: The Leftover Ila Baby Quilt

You might remember a week or two ago when Kelli was home, she put together a UFO Ila had sent to me to use as a donation quilt. This one…

Ila used a strip tube ruler when she put this together and then sent me all of the leftovers. I was able to make a few blocks like this…

On Friday, I went to the sewing room and played with them. I also used some bonus triangles left from the other quilt. I ended up with this configuration. No pattern…just playing….using what I had.

It wasn’t quite big enough so I checked if I had any fabric that might work with it. I came up with this. At one point in time, I bought it at the thrift store.

I added borders…Check how I matched the seam when I joined the border strips…The funny part, I didn’t try to match them. They just came out that way. Surprising, right?

I decided to immediately longarm it.

I had to piece the backing as it was 45″ wide… Here it is all finished.

It’s no stellar work of art, but it isn’t bad. In fact, I like the center so much I thought about making an entire quilt like that. It looks like pieced spool blocks. The triangles around the outside are bonus triangles.

I just hate letting things go to waste. Here is proof. The extra bonus triangles went in when I pieced the backing…HA!!

It was a fun quick little quilt that cost virtually nothing. Between using Ila’s leftovers, making use of the bonus triangles, and using a fabric from the thrift store, and leftover batting…it was a real win!

I used a simple stipple for the quilting motif. I used a white thread on the front and the back.

It was such a fun day making this quilt. I miss this kind of quilting…making something out of nothing- pieces most people would throw away.

Hmm. I am really liking this block. I turned and twisted those pieces so many times to come up with a good workable block, and this one definitely is one I like. I am seriously thinking about making a whole quilt using this block. It would be just blocks and no border. Hmm.

Thanks for the fun Ila. You’re the best!!

I love it – Just finished a spool block top and set it aside to work on a confirmation quilt for our granddaughter.

  2. I’m a sucker for spool blocks and this one is really cute! You got me thinking about doing something like it. It’s a real winner !

  3. Another very cute quilt – I guess you could say it is a bonus quilt since it didn’t cost you anything. I like the overall look of spools. I have to admit I had to study it a little bit to figure out the squares, but I succeeded!!

Love it! The HSTS in the corners really add something and are a bit unusual. I just love your Monday posts!

  5. Oh so cute, Jo! I really like it. Made out of scraps that most people would throw away – a real winner. You should write a pattern for it. I’d buy it.
    Hugs and blessings

  6. I love the Spool quilt, has so much personality! You sure have gotten a lot done lately! What a good feeling it must be!

  7. You are such an inspiration! I have a design board full of 2 1/2” x 9 1/2” strips sewn into pairs and no idea what to do with them. Thanks to you, I have a couple of ideas to try.

The other day you mentioned left over blocks. I often make pillow sham covers to go with the quilt when l miscount my blocks.

  9. I LOVE this quilt! Do not know anything about using a strip tube ruler but will Google it! I have a ton of Kansas Troubles fabric and would love to add this to my ‘To Do’ list of quilts to make. You are amazing, Jo. And an inspiration to all of us! Thank you!
