I have a finish to share…
Several years ago, a blog reader sent me a pile of half-square triangles. They were all done in bright colors…so pretty. I packed them away, thinking someday I’d do something with them. Well, not so long ago, I was digging for something else and saw them. In my quest to get as many UFOs done as possible, I decided it was time. This was a project that wouldn’t be too hard, as I had very quickly decided to make a simple half square triangle with them.
The pieces, I am assuming, were leftovers from another project. I trimmed all of the half-square triangles to 3″ in size. Then I counted them. I can’t remember exactly how many I had, but around 90, I think. I decided I would want a quilt around 45 x 45…so I would need the quilt to be in an 18 x 18 layout. I figured out how many triangles I would need for that, then I subtracted how many I had and went to work making the extra needed ones.
In no time, I had a pretty little quilt. This was so fun to work with bright spring-like colors.

I always say I like simple quilts…I really do.

It went together very quickly.

I put lots of different colors in the quilt. I think the person who sent the triangles had been working with a fabric line. I just went with similar colors to the ones that were in her blocks.
I used a simple straight line for the quilting motif. I don’t use a ruler for the lines. I just eyeball them.

Once the quilting was done, I decided to check out my box with binding leftovers.

I sewed together leftover scraps of binding strips and bound it in scrappy colors.
This is the backing…isn’t it perfect?? I used this to bind another quilt. I just love it. The print is actually a Pottery Barn 100% cotton sheet.

I think I have enough scraps to put together for another baby quilt backing. That makes me happy!!

It was windy when I took the pictures. Thankfully, my patience won out, and I was able to get some presentable photos.
This was such a fun and easy quilt…and turned out cute. Never underestimate the power of a simple half-square triangle.

This is so pretty! I finally got a long arm machine! I have just finished piecing a baby quilt and will quilt it today, gift it tomorrow. I love straight line quilting, it’s truly my favorite. I have only done that on my domestic machine so was looking forward to using the long arm for that. But I just learned you do straight line with a channel lock or a ruler. Ruler work doesn’t appeal to me and, oh my, put the channel lock on-stitch one line-take off channel lock and reposition for next line-put channel lock back on doesn’t appeal to me at all. You said you just eyeball it….do you just walk the machine side to side and make it “organically” straight?
I love simple quilts – the fancy ones are nice but simple ones seem to be used more. Which is what I want.
I love your quilt. :-)
Love and prayers
Another winner! Such a pretty quilt! I can see a toddler loving this and dragging it everywhere. Nice job.
Such a cute quilt. I’m inspired. Thank you!
Love it! Another idea for my ‘to-do’ list!
What size do the triangles need to be to be able to trim to 3″? I think these are the perfect size – not too small to make the sewing so onerous but small enough to give the quilt that pieced look.
Beautiful.
I saw a chart showing what size squares to start with for a 2 at a time half square triangle. It said to add 7/8″ to the final size you want the trimmed hst to be. So start with 3 7/8 squares. But it’s also good to make bigger so you can trim down to final size. So try starting with 4″ squares.
Just Google or search on Pinterest or YouTube, “what is starting size square for 3” hst. There are lots of sites that show charts.
I love this quilt and prefer simple ones myself. Great finish!
Beautiful quilt and I also like simple quilts. It is fun to do more complex once in a while but simple is pretty. I recently quilted a big quilt using straight line quilting, or I say “mostly” straight line. Great work!!
You inspire me Jo! I need to get busy with my scraps…. I’ve been thinking of a log cabin quilt. Maybe I’ll do darker colors for a log cabin and the brights for the triangle quilt. Yours is so cute!
Wow, what a cute quilt!
I love this quilt!!!!!
Beautiful! I just love all the happy colors! Hugs,
What a happy, cheerful quilt! And to think it was made with “leftovers” makes it even more special. I always say you can’t beat a good HST or 9-patch block for a fun, easy to sew quilt. There’s just so many ways to put them together. Fun, fun, fun. Love it, Jo.
Jo, the quilt is so beautifully done.
I prefer simple quilts they make the colors the focus. It’s fun to figure out what you want to do then get it done.
