Quilt Finish: Anders’ Preschool Quilt

I told you on Monday that I finished Anders’ quilt. I didn’t include pictures with Anders because Kalissa had them and hadn’t shared them with me at the time. I have some photos now so I can share…

As I was putting the binding on the quilt, I saw a pillow form there. CRAP. I was supposed to have a pillowcase made too. I dug until I had piece of fabric that was big enough and quickly made one. Here is what the finished set looked like.

The idea for the quilt originally came from Lori Holt’s book, Spelling Bee. You can find it HERE.

She originally used 6″ blocks. I used 5″ blocks.

The top was inspired by a piece of camouflage minky fabric that I bought for the backing.

Anders is a nut about the army and loves anything with the army on it. I originally thought I would get a panel with a soldier on it but then decided being school doesn’t allow guns, I better not make anything with a gun on it. Then I found some toy army man fabric and thought that might be okay. Rick suggested I not. Even toy soldiers have guns. So when I saw the minky fabric, I quickly went with it. I just pulled greens that went okay with the backing fabric. The coloring is better in person.

So what did Anders think?? He picked this day to jump right in and be Mr. Shy Guy.

He was not interested in getting his picture taken.

Before he had stopped by to pick it up, Kalissa had hyped it up as being special. That back fired and Anders got all shy instead of being excited.

This is common with Anders. He can get a really shy streak. I don’t get bothered by it at all…it’s just him. I know he’s still happy with the quilt.

He ended up being shy when he went to school too. We’ve all been wondering how it will go for him at school. I don’t know how we got a shy kid in the bunch but we sure did!! I’m just so thankful I got the quilt done in time!!

  1. Oh Anders. What handsome young man you are. I hope you will be so happy with your Army quilt when you at school.!! I bet your Grandma Joey has made the greatest quilt just for you. Please enjoy this special time at school.

  2. I love the quilt and just wanted to say what a handsome fellow he is. All your grandchildren are beautiful. I’m sure once he needs his blanket, he will appreciate his grandma’s skill as a quilter.

  3. A darling quilt for a darling little guy. Maybe I[m not remembering correctly, but didn’t Gannon go through a time of not wanting his picture taken? I can hardly believe that Anders is the last of the grands. Maybe you will get a surprise someday – lol!!

  4. I agree. I recall Gannon going through a NO PHOTOS stage. He grew out of it. I’m not sure how shy he was at school, but it passes as he makes friends. He is used to his brothers and cousins and cats. This is all new. He is so cute. As were all the grands at that stage. Love the quilt! You did a great job of adapting something he wanted to something he could have.

  5. Anders is a real cutie. His quilt really came out well. Minky was a good idea for the back. I hope he enjoys school. My daughter is a teacher. I think she described first graders as feral the first day.

    1. He’s just adorable! I can relate to being shy, it’s still hard. Love the quilt colors and his name on it.

  6. The quilt is precious, Jo. I know he loves it. What a thoughtful grandma you are. I love the colors of the squares.

  7. Hi. Jo
Anders quilt is terrific, very obviously given lots of love. I’ve got a daughter very much like Anders. When she started preschool she would go got in her locker and stay there for about 30 minutes. Her teacher was amazing. She knew my daughter needed a little bit to transition from home to school. I’ve always considered her reserved. I tried not to make a big deal of her need for a little extra space to acclimate. She’s in her 40s now and is still the same way. She hates talking on the phone Her preferred communication is via text I’m guessing she’ll not change,.she does well. Just takes an extra moment. Maybe Anders is the same. Given space and time Anders will continue to be very successful. Just needs that extra moment
Congratulations to Anders for getting to start school and for the quilt made with love and care by his Grandma I’m sure his quilt will be a wonderful comfort as he progresses in school.
