Quilt Finish: 50 Cent Quilt Top

My 50-cent quilt top is done…yahoo!!

If you remember, I bought this quilt top at the thrift store for 50 cents. I didn’t see a tag on it, took it to the counter to ask, and the gal at the register said that any fabric not marked is 50 cents…um, DEAL!! I was planning on finishing it and donating it. As is, it was a little small. I wanted a bigger throw.

A kind blog reader said the pattern is from Kim Diehl’s book, Simple Charm. You can find it HERE.

If you want to try applique, this one looks fairly easy. The pieces aren’t small and much of the quilt is pieced.

After some contemplation, I was more confused than ever. A couple of kind blog readers sent me links to the fabric line; however, the pieces of fabric I needed were no longer available…and I was being frugal, not wanting to spend more money. So, I dug through my fabric a couple of times.

I ended up finding a cream color for an inner border…

…and a friend of mine, Doreen, had sent me the red for backing a quilt. There was a lot there, so I thought I could use it for a backing and still have enough for a border on this quilt…and that’s what I did.

I finally got it all finished.

Sorry about the lighting…Rain was expected for later in the day, so I had to take pictures when I did.

For the backing, I found a sheet from the thrift store…I thought it was a pretty good choice.

Here is a close-up, and you can decide if you think the fabrics I chose for the borders were good ones or not.

I’m happy with them…of course, they would look better if I had fabric for the fabric line…but that can’t always happen.

Who would believe that I bought this quilt top for 50 cents??? It was a great find, and I’m off to donate it now. Many thanks to the person/family who donated this. Donations can really go a long way!

  1. Under your care, that castaway became a beautiful quilt. I love the borders. Matching fabric from the line would have been okay but would lack the added flair of depth and complexity you gave it. Hurrah!

  2. Jo you did a beautiful job on finishing quilt top. Your color choices were spot on. Someone will be very happy to wrap themselves up for comfort and warmth.

  3. What a beautiful quilt. The borders just make it pop. I would have never guessed that the borders weren’t from that fabric line. They look terrific! Great job!

  4. You did a terrific job finishing this quilt! I agree that using something outside the fabric line added dimension and complexity that too matchy wouldn’t have. Great finish !

  5. WOW!! You did a fantastic job on that 50-cent quilt top, and you made it shine and sing out loud! I love it! Looking at it before you added borders and quilted it, I don’t think I would have attempted it or even bought it. You are definitely the “Quilting Queen” in my book!!

  6. Beautiful quilt!! I’m a firm believer that a quilt does not need to be made from just one fabric line and your good choices proves me right!! Someone will love it!

  7. WOW! Excellent choices for fabrics, Jo! You turned a 50-cent quilt that was pretty into a GORGEOUS quilt that someone is going to absolutely love! I’m always a sucker for hexagons. The backing was perfect, too. What a magnificent quilt to donate.

  8. Wow….as many of the earlier posts noted!!! Perfect on all accounts. And, glad you we’re able to steal a few minutes in the sewing room!!!!

  9. I love it! Your choices of fabric are spot on! I’m going to dig out the book and look at the pattern. Thank you. Yours looks beautiful, it’s going to make someone very happy. Hugs,

Wow! What a great finish! The fabrics you picked look perfect. You have such a talent for making something beautiful and useful from fabrics others have cast aside. Well done Jo – I’ll bet Kim Diehl would love this one too!
