My great-nephew is getting married in May. I typically gift a quilt for family weddings. I remembered that I gifted his sister this quilt. You can read about the quilt HERE.

This was fun to make…thinking about this next wedding, I thought maybe I should do another Spider Web String quilt. Hmm. Then I saw a quilt book lying on the sewing room island. The cover had another spider web string quilt, only in a serpentine layout.

Hmm. I like the layout…not necessarily how the quilt is finished. Yah…I’d work with this. Then I wondered about colors. Hmm. I was thinking picnic blanket quilt. Then an email that came got me thinking about the 250th anniversary of our country. Hmm. How about I do it in patriotic colors? I thought that might be good.
Then Kelli called and was chatting with me. She asked me if I was working on any special projects. I told her my idea about the spider web string quilt for a wedding present. We talked a little more. Then we started making plans to see each other this weekend. Then I asked if she wanted to help me with it and we could give it as a joint gift. She said yes…
So that prompted me to get busy. She’s going to be here on Saturday, so we’re going to power sew these blocks. If I had the blocks prepped and the fabric pulled, we could get at it quicker. YEP, I was going to get everything prepped.
I had navy colored solid print fabric, so that was going to be the background fabric.

When I made the previous quilt, I had them cut a template for the solid colored kite. I checked to see if it was the same size. My template was slightly larger, but I decided to go for it.
I had to adjust the size of the paper to cut for the foundation piecing. I cut mine at 8 1/2″ square and then cut them on the diagonal. For years, I’ve saved phone books, but they don’t come much anymore. I’ve learned to buy THIS from Amazon.

It is newsprint paper. It comes in an 8 1/2″ x 11″ size. It comes larger, too. It’s 500 sheets for $15.19. So when I have phone books, I use them. When I don’t, I have this on hand as a back up.
After I cut the kites, I cut the paper. Then I wipe the center of the paper triangle with a swipe of glue and put the fabric kite in place.

Well, I was this far, I might as well try out a block, right?

I have a bag of red, blue, and white strings. Doreen gave them to me. I plan to use them on this quilt. THANKS Doreen!!
I did two triangles while Anders was sleeping.

Then I trimmed them up.
I just flip them over and trim at the edge of the paper.

I have two done…and whole-whole-whole big bunch to go.

The more I think about it, I like this layout…I think I’ll do the serpentine layout, but do the piano keyboard border.

No matter what I do, I need triangles sewn, so I’ll worry about the rest after we get that done.
So I’ll be working on this over the weekend when I have a Kelli and kids sewing day. I’m so excited!! Kelli sewing day are always fun.

Yea, to have Kelli help. I’ve always liked that layout but not the yellow.
This will be a great picnic quilt in the red, white and blue. Great that Kelli can come for a day and you can work together sewing this. Have a great day!
You are blessed to have Kelli. I have four granddaughters and none of them are interested in quilting.
This is going to be spectacular

Jo, I save the Medicare books that come yearly. I’ll bet you have some people around with a pile of them. Free is good.
How VERY Smart of you!! I’ve been wondering how to get more use out of those!!
Your great nephew’s quilt is going to be gorgeous! And having Kelli help is a real bonus! Looking forward to seeing the progress!
