Popcorn balls are a family favorite around here. Â Tradition on my side of the family is to have them at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Â After Mom died it seems that I inherited the job to make them. Â Luckily, it’s a pretty easy tradition to carry on. Â We don’t do the cooking syrup method. Â We do the marshmallow version.
They are really super easy and it’s something that looks way longer than it takes. Â Start out by filling a big bowl like the silver one full of popcorn. Â I air pop ours. Â Then take the big white bowl and microwave a stick of butter and a large bag of marshmallows…I do it for about 2 minutes. Â Stir it up until the marshmallows are all melted and smooth.
Gradually add the popcorn making sure to leave out the unpopped old maids. Â Stir in the popcorn. Â Once it’s all mixed it’s time to start forming the balls. Â I coat my hands in butter then squish together the popcorn into balls.
One batch made about a dozen big balls. Â These all went to the bake sale for the Humane Society except, of course, for the one I ate.
Oooh – popcorn balls! Haven’t had one in years. My mom would add red or green food coloring when she made them at Christmas.
Haha! Well done for only eating one!! This looks like a fantastic recipe – we’re going to have to try it. I have only ever made caramel popcorn balls before.
