I’ve spent the day baking goodies for Christmas. The star cookies are made. The Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker cookies are made. The Peanut Butter BonBons are made. The Rolo Pretzels are made. The Turtles are made. I have the sugar cookie dough made and in the refrigerator….
Then came the Pfeffernusse.
I haven’t made them for a couple years. They are a German cookie/candy. They are best if you kind of suck on them rather than chew them like a cookie…they are so good. The recipe I had was Grandma Kramer’s and she made a batch that used 24 (yes 24) cups of flour. I tackled that once with hubby and that was just too much and I haven’t made them since.
Yesterday I was over at The Frugal Girl’s blog and saw that she was planning to make Pfeffernusse. Her recipe only used seven cups of flour…I tried it right away. I was happily adding ingredients and then realized I didn’t have cardamon. UGH!! I was off to town.
The recipe was GREAT. The only difference I made was that we roll ours in powdered sugar after they come out of the oven. That’s how Grandma Kramer made hers. They were definitely hubby approved.
I’ve been pretty good so far only eating a few treats here and there but I think these Pfeffernusse will be my undoing.
I was just wondering about the paraffin wax in your turtle recipe?
It sounds kinds different and we don’t have that so readily available here in Holland.Could I use margarine?
Otherwise the recipe sounds yummy
