Our Saturday…

Kalissa needed a babysitter on Saturday morning, so Rick and I took care of the boys.

Here’s Gannon showing off his lego build of the day.

Since Rick and I started fishing, we haven’t tried fishing right in our town. We have a mill pond that people often fish in.

I suggested we give it a try while the boys were here. We loaded them up, drove to their house, and got their poles. Then back to the Mill Pond. It takes a bit of patience when you’re fishing with three boys. We are trying really hard to get Carver to mostly be self sufficient.

Carver caught a fish right away.

Anders did too.

Then Carver again…

Rick caught a couple of small ones…He wasn’t fishing by me so I didn’t get a picture.

Then it was my turn to catch one…

We were about done. At this point, Rick and Carver were tied for two fish each. I only had one. Then Rick caught another. Carver and I started packing up, and Rick yelled he had one. He had thrown his line in one last time. He had a big fish on his line.

I hurried over to take a picture but this is the sight I saw…

Rick had the fish and was landing him when his line broke. He jumped in, thinking he could grab the fish as it was stuck in some branches along the bank. He missed it. I said what happened. Anders said, “Rick’s fish come up, and then it go down.” You can bet Rick’s big fish story was longer than Anders’ version. HA!! He was right. Rick had him up out of the water, then the line broke, and he went back down into the water. HA!!

It was a big, large-mouthed bass. But he got away… We all heard about it all day. Poor Rick. HA!!

The boys left at about noon. Rick and I had the rest of the day…but we had work to do. We went and got the garage at his apartment complex cleaned out. He has to go back one more time to vacuum and mop the apartment, then he can turn in his keys.

We were pooped. Carrying and loading boxes is never fun.

Rick suggested stopping and getting some hamburger and having burgers. That sounded great to me. What sounded even better, he was cooking. I was trying to think of what side we’d have with the burgers when I saw shrimp skewers on the meat counter. I know it’s not a salad, but I decided they sounded great, so we went to the shrimp section and bought shrimp. I could defrost them and put them on a skewer. It was much cheaper than buying them already on the skewer.

So Rick cooked…

We ended up having BBQ shrimp, bacon cheeseburgers with lettuce and tomato, and tater tots. It was fabulous.

We had a perfect day. We had fun with the kiddos, got some work done, ate amazing food, and spent some quality time all around.

Fun day. I quit fishing when dad, grandpa and my uncle started making me bait my own hook and take the fish off. Before that, i could just swing it over to whoever was within reach and they’d get me ready to catch the next one. They had to scramble the day I caught a huge snapping turtle that broke my bamboo pole. I got sent back to the house to get the shotgun from grandma. Grandpa didn’t want that turtle in his pond, eating his fish. The farm was in Van Buren co, Iowa.

  2. Does Rick know that there are tagged fish in the pond worth a $100 prize? We can only assume that it was his big one that got away, right? Sounds like a fun day!

  3. It sounds like a perfect way to spend a Saturday. The boys are good fishermen and I guess Rick is too! haha The meal at the end looks mighty yummy too!

  4. Is the fishing “catch and eat” or catch and release”. I don’t hear much about eating fish so I’m guessing it’s c & r.
