I have a bunch of random things that really can’t go into a single blog post on their own, so I’m putting them together into one post.
Rick and I have continued to go fishing. We’ve learned that we love to take the boys fishing right at the end of our day with them. Last week we were going to watch the kids until 4:30 to 5 pm. So at 3 pm, we had them clean up all their toys, loaded up the fishing gear, and took them to the Mill Pond to fish. Kalissa ended up picking them up from the park.
It’s so nice…then we know they cleaned up their stuff before they left, and that gets up set up for our time to go fishing.
Here’s Carver and the fish he caught that day. Gannon and Anders were content to just play at the park. No fishing for them. Thankfully, we can see them at the park from where we fish. We’re still close if someone would get hurt or need us. Everyone can have their own kind of fun. Carver always stays and fishes with us.
After they left, we just stayed and fished some more.
As we were getting ready for the garage sale, Gannon found this strainer and insists it’s an army hat. HA!!
Eli is also a kid who prefers hanging out with adults. He’s not a big television fan. Here he’s hanging with me while I make potato salad. He was so interested in watching me cut up the cooled potatoes.
Here’s a picture of Kelli with Georgia and Emmett. You can see the Rubik’s Cube there. Oh, did I ever impress the kids that I can easily solve one side of the cube. I really want to practice up and learn how to completely finish it. These kiddos would really be impressed with me then. They are already impressed with just getting one side together. HA!!
They are getting to the point that soon, nap time will not be a thing. They are growing up so fast. On this day, Carver fell asleep before Anders. Of course, he “wasn’t even tired.” His attitude told Rick and me otherwise. HA!!
On one of the hottest days, it was 116 heat index, Rick and I decided to run away…go for a drive and do nothing. We ended up in Dubuque and had lunch at the Barrel House.
I am a big-time fan of a Reuben sandwich. I often order them. Sweet Potato fries are also a favorite of mine.
I always order sour cream to go with my sweet potato fries. This time they came with something else…marshmallow cream?? What??
The waitress said it’s a new thing…the marshmallow cream for dipping. Apparently, it’s supposed to be reminiscent of sweet potatoes at Thanksgiving. I said Oh- and politely accepted the sauce. I am not a fan of sweet potatoes with marshmallows. I did try the sauce and immediately set it aside.
It was a quick reminder that I like food more savory than sweet.
So friends…would you be a person who would like the marshmallow dip for your sweet potatoes??? I’m curious to know if it’s just me who doesn’t like marshmallows with sweet potatoes and definitely would like it with sweet potato fries.
Try apple butter as a dip for your sweet potato fries!
That’s what I was going to say: Apple Butter! A restaurant in our area serves apple butter with their sweet potato fries. Now I’m surprised that every restaurant doesn’t! Haha!
I use the applesauce that is just apples, water, and ascorbic acid, no sweetner.
No marshmallows for me

Your sandwich and sweet potato fries look yummy. I don’t think I would like marshmallows with sweet potato fries either. I like my marshmallows with Rice Krispies!!
Our sweet potato fries aren’t like your fries and I wish they were. I do like marshmallows on my baked sweet potatoes but I’d pass on my fries.

I don’t like anything sweet on my sweet potatoes. I like them baked or mashed with salt and butter. I also am not that fond of sweet potato fries, preferring regular fries. I’m definitely savory, not sweet!
I’m a sweet potato with marshmallow fan. It’s been a tradition in our family for years. Even though we now do Thanksgiving at our daughter’s house and we make pulled pork, spots and marshmallows are still a requested side :)
Yuck. I don’t even want marshmallows on my sweet potatoes at Thanksgiving. I like mine with just a little cinnamon and butter.
No marshmallow for me either – a little salt and I am good! The boys are going to have great memories of your fishing trips.

I like baked sweet potatoes plain. Thanksgiving sweet potatoes with butter and brown sugar.
Marshmallows and sweet potatoes do not go together, in my house. Marshmallows are for rice Krispie treats and pineapple coleslaw salad. Or roasted over an open fire.
My Iowa grandmother made a slaw with colorful miniature marshmallows that I loved as a child. She has been gone for a very long time and I’m wondering if your slaw recipe is the one she used. Can you share your recipe with me?

Love the sweet potato fries, but dipping them in maple syrup is very tasty!!
I love Chipotle Ranch dressing to dip my sweet potato fries in. There’s a restaurant chain here that their meat is rotisserie chicken and they have 3 sauces. The house special sauce is the chipotle ranch. It’s SO good!
No marshmallows for my sweet potatoes. I am not a fan of marshmallows in any form. Definitely would not try the marshmallow sauce!

Next time you get to Dubuque check out 7Hills. We eat there every time we are there. We love Dubuque. You will have to take the little trolley up the hill sometime. As far as sweet potato fries, I can’t eat fried foods so I don’t have an opinion on that. I like sweet potatoes with just butter and salt and pepper.
There’s a little place here in our town that has sweet potatoes fries with a caramel cinnamon dipping sauce that is to die for!!! Much better than the marshmallows. JMHO
I hate marshmallow and sweet potatoes! My mother ruined me…that was the only way I ever saw sweet potatoes prepared when I was a kid. I didn’t even know you could eat them any other way until I was an adult. Now I love them! Fries, baked and topped with sauerkraut (my favorite), or loaded up with beans and pico. Yum!
I don’t like marshmallow on sweet potatoes. Gross. I hate them in jello too. I don’t like soggy stuff. I have a recipe for sweet potato casserole without marshmallows.
Exactly! Sweet potatoes are sweet enough without marshmallows. With apologies to those of you who love it, I don’t know how that horrible casserole became a classic!!!
That lunch is one of my favorites – makes me want to run to my favorite cafe! I’ve never heard of the marshmallow sauce for dipping, tho – around here sweet potato fries are usually served with honey mustard sauce. What wonderful memories you are storing with Rick and the children! Enjoy every minute!
IMHO, that ghastly sweet sweet potato dish at Thanksgiving is one of those “supposed to have” things. No one really likes it and takes just a bit to be polite, but heaven forbid it’s not on the menu. So I don’ think I’d like marshmallow fluff for dipping either. I much prefer baking sweet potatoes tossed with a bit of oil and chili powder. I will say apple butter does sound good with sweet potato fries.
I will take a pass on marshmallow cream with my sweet potato fries. I would also take a pass on the sour cream. I totally love straight-up sweet potato fries, no anything more needed (especially no cinnamon) except salt & pepper, thank you. I’m cracking up over your poll.
That marshmallow sauce actually sounds quite nice as long as they season the fries correctly for it, but I couldn’t imagine having it in the middle of a meal and I don’t know if I’d be happy with it as the dessert – so perhaps as an appetizer/bar bite separate from a proper meal. There’s a reason most people only have sweet potatoes with marshmallows on top at most once a year and only with a specific meal…
No marshmallows for me Unless there is a campfire and a stick to cook them with! I like butter and maybe cinnamon on my baked sweet potatoes, no Casserole at Thanksgiving and if I have them fried- just plain.
No marshmallow cream for me, I’m an old girl from Texas and my preference on just about everything that needs to be dipped is homemade Ranch dressing. My boys called it “moo juice” when they were young. But honestly, they still eat it on a lot of their daily food. I make it up in gallon jugs when I know they are coming. They always take a jug home, and return it empty, so that I can fill it back up. Pamj
