My New Doggy Friend

A post from Kelli–

Two Sunday’s ago there was an auction in the town that I live in.  Before church, I got to talking to one of my friends about it.  They had mentioned that they were planning on going as well.  I have seen them at previous auctions and asked if they had been at any good ones lately.  They told me that they had been to one the previous weekend and found these cute little dog lawn ornaments and they mentioned that one of them looked like a beagle.  I definitely knew that was an auction I should have gone to!

After church, I went home to try to get some homework done.  I headed up to the auction a bit before it started and happened to see my friend there as well.  She told me to talk to her before I left because they had something special for me in her car.  While they were selling some things that I wasn’t very interested in, I went over to the car with her boyfriend and lo and behold I saw this little cutie!

Beagle Steps (225x400)
Is he not the cutest thing in the world?!?!?!  I just love him!  I can’t believe that they gifted him to me.  I haven’t picked out a name for him quite yet, so if you have any suggestions, feel free to send them my way!

Anyway, I made my way home with him and got him set out on my front steps.  I got a few other things at the auction that I’ll have to tell you about another day…and one thing that I didn’t get and should have snapped up, but I think that this is my favorite thing that I came home with that day!  Thanks a bunch Pat!

My husband had a plaster dog just until our firstborn fell against it and she shattered.

Now it’s gonna drive me nuts trying to remember what he’d named that thing! (Might be Priscilla, or that might be the name of the real basset hound he had as a kid….)

Aww, this reminds me of the basset hound we had when I was growing up. He had the saddest eyes and the shortest legs! He couldn’t get his own behind into the car, but he could get up on top of the dining room table to eat the apples! We thought he had been stolen or wandered away from home when we could not find him one day. He had managed to find the new mall in town and discovered the automatic doors and air-conditioning. Yes, I am that old. Anyway, my mom got a phone call from the mall administrators to come get him. During the next two years of living in that little town, my mom got several phone calls requesting her to come get him. We did not have air-conditioning at home. His name was Sam and we loved him.

He reminds me of a dog some neighbors had when I was young in the 1950’s. We lived in a little town of 1,200 people where everyone knew everyone else. The dog’s name was Peggy Commons. She lived in a lovely home with Dr. Commons, the dentist, and his wife, Beatrice who loved reading and volunteered at the library. There were two sons, John and Jeff.

Peggy had grown long and a bit wide and she moved slowly but she didn’t stay home even though she had a beautiful big backyard to play in. Everyone figured she just had to go out walking and that’s what she did. She always used the sidewalks and looked both ways when crossing the streets. Peggy walked often and was always happy to see the kids, especially the girls.

I think your childcare kids might enjoy naming your newest dog. Then they could have a little party to welcome him to your home.

What a great gift! Our first dog was a beagle, and he was a barn dog. Mostly he stayed around the farm, but every once in a while, he would make his way to the nearest town – about a quarter mile up the road. He would sit outside the small mom-and-pop grocery store and beg for treats. His name was Mike. I don’t know who decided on the name, but we loved him.

Yep, he’s a Basset Hound and looks a lot like our “Bud”. When we got Bud as a puppy my husband wanted to name him “Jethro” but I couldn’t imagine hollering that across our yard all the time! We settled on “Bud”. Looking forward to hearing which name you choose . . . :o)
