Monday with the Grands

Most every Monday we have the grandkids…and often on Thursdays too. Of course, there are a few other days too. Mostly, it’s Monday and Thursdays.

We were kind of dreading Monday. The weather was supposed to be hot, and it was supposed to storm. That meant that we likely couldn’t kick them outside to burn off some energy. We were told to expect a big of rain- only 15% chance of rain in the morning…then big severe storms in the late afternoon and early evening.

It turns out it rained a lot in the morning. It rained so hard, and it wasn’t even for a very long time. I knew it had rained a lot but didn’t realize how much until one of the grandkids looked outside and said, “Grandma. Your neighbor’s yard is flooded.” It was.

I ended up going to the garage door and took another picture. Yep, we got a lot of rain.

Rick ended up going out and checking the rain gauge. It was just under 6″. WOW. This was over about 3 1/2 hours, but the brunt of it came in about an hour.

In between the showers, the doorbell rang. It was my mailman. He put these packages by my front door. These were all from Helen and were PACKED with cross-stitch patterns. Oh my. I wasn’t feeling the best. My stomach wasn’t happy, and my back wasn’t happy. I took advantage of the packages and took a chance to sit and go through them. So many patterns. Oh my. I found a few goodies to add to my collection. THANKS, Helen…for both the patterns and the chance to sit and sort. The kids were wearing me out.

Then our friend Sue messaged and said she had leftovers after having a family get-together. Did we want some?? YES. As I said, I wasn’t feeling the best, and if I didn’t have to cook much for supper, all the better. On top of it…the leftover she was sending along was smoked meat. I always say yes to smoked meat!!

We did have it for supper, and everyone raved over it!! There was enough that we’ll have another night off from cooking. YES!! Thanks, Sue, you made my day!!

Eli asked me to take a picture of him and Rosie. First Rosie yawned…

Then she licked her nose.

Finally, we got an okay one-minus, not seeing Eli’s eyes the best.

It turns out that afternoon storms did not materialize for us. WHEW. Towns to the west and south of us got it instead. All of us were thankful they didn’t come to fruition.

After everyone left and the dishes were done, I was finally feeling better. The only problem I had was being pooped. My headache was gone…my back was some better. I sat down to write this blog post, and my phone was filled with photos.

The boys were making Army Man setups. They asked to have my phone and take pictures. There are about 25 different photos of setups. HA!!

Years ago, I bought a $2.50 set of Army Men at the thrift store. They are by far the most prized toy at my house. BY FAR. The boys play with them every time they come. Sometimes they play Magna Tiles with them. Sometimes the Army Men battle the dinosaurs. It’s always something that involves the men.

Any time I find anything at the thrift store that involves this style of Army Men, I buy it immediately. Recently, Kelli found the tank. It is the new prized piece.

I love letting the kids take my phone and take pictures of their setups. It’s a sweet reminder of them every time I check in on my camera roll after they go.

All in all, it was a good day…But I am so ready for bed. Rick is too.

  1. Oh you did get rain! Sorry you weren’t feeling tops, but glad you had some sit down time. Those grand kiddos are growing so fast. I like the pictures of Eli and Rosie, real cute!

  2. My little brother played with the same army men. After my mom died, I found the army men and cars and tanks in a box. I saved them for a few years because my brother died in an accident when he was 31. Years later his daughter who was born after he died had a son and I gave the toys to her. I wanted to keep them forever but I knew or hoped her son would play with them. The memory of my brother playing on the floor will never leave me.

  3. Kids and grandkids are never too young to help with dishes especially with your ongoing health. My grandmother always said have the kids do everything g you do and they will learn. They learned cooking, mechanical and every sort of thing we did. It was always slower getting done but they learned.
