Moda comes up with lots of challenges for us Chefs and the challenge for the month of January was to come up with projects that used the mine charm packs called Moda Candy.  Well I hadn’t played much with the new pack so I thought I would give it try.  I figured most of the other chefs would be making small projects so I decided to think big and make a quilt.

This uses two charm packs and is very easy.  I sat down and sewed the entire top in an afternoon/evening setting.  Another fun fact-there are no seams to match so if you are teaching a beginner to sew or if you yourself are a beginner, this is a great quilt to start with.

Who’s holding that quilt…Peek a boo…it’s my son Karl!!  I love having this guy home from college!!

quilt-4

…but I digress.  Back to the quilt.  How it got made is quite a saga.  I sent the design in for approval a week or so before Thanksgiving.  I expected the fabric after Thanksgiving and had time scheduled to sew.   Between mix ups and miss communication I didn’t get the fabric until the 19th.  Well by then the holidays had kicked in around here.  I’ve been scrambling to get time to get it finished by my December 31st publishing date…good news is, I made the deadline!!  (odd news-scheduling got screwed up and it wasn’t posted until today!)

For quilting I used a off white thread on the front and back.  I did a wave with a swirl across the whole quilt.  I loaded it into the machine width-wise so I could travel the length of the quilt.

CandyWishes-1

On the red border and on the squares I peddled it with small circles.  I had honestly intended on doing some fancier quilting but time was not my friend and I settled with this.

The backing fabric is WONDERFUL.  I wish I had yards of it to back other quilts too.

CandyWishes-2

This quilt doesn’t have a home as of yet.  I think it is going to go with the next batch of charity quilts that gets sent out.

  1. yes, I’ve purchased both charm packs and candy packs: I love them. and I like to haunt the moda bake shop site to look for fun patterns to make with them. I really love the pre-cuts- it makes it so much easier to just sit down and quilt!

  2. Wow! I love this quilt, all of it! The beauty is in it’s simplicity, so lovely. I like the fact it looks so clean in design, and it is a little faster to put together. After Christmas, I am so ready for that! I love the fabric chosen and that backing is so colorful! I have purchased a few mini charm packs, but have not used them. I do love precuts, gets you sewing faster. I was especially looking at your quilting, I love that too, it just works with this design, and very doable..Overall, an instant favorite!

  3. I’ve purchased several mini charm packs, they’re easy and fun to work with! Simply put, the precuts make quilting quicker, and you can use all the fabrics in a line!

  4. I usually buy at least 2 matching mini-charms (one to use, one to keep!) and often get more–love these little guys. I’ve made a few quilts with them too! I recently made El’s ‘new’ signature pattern Double 4-patch with a couple of Glamping mini-charms. Sew much fun!

  5. I love mini charm squares. I belong to the Fat Quarter Shop mini charm of the month. And I can’t wait each month to receive my batch of mini charms. I am collecting patterns to use up my min charms and this quilt pattern will do just fine. Thanks for the give a way.

  6. I purchased a sampler box of the mini charms and made simple 4-patch quilt. It had all kinds of fabrics & colors & turned out great. Thanks for the chance to win.

  7. I’ve never bought a mini charm pack but I’ve used several regular charm packs. I’ve been afraid I wouldn’t be able to control such small squares. I suppose, just like everything else, there are tricks to master when sewing with them.

  8. I haven’t bought any of the mini charms as yet. Really had no idea how I would use one but this is such a cute quilt.

  9. I’ve been “collecting” mini charm packs! I made a table topper with the PB&J mini charms. I really like having the entire line of fabrics to use, too. I’m very tempted to make your Candy Wishes quilt! Thanks for the pattern and the chance to win!

  10. I purchased several mini charm packs in November — my local quilt shop lady is pretty smart, she keeps them in a cute basket on the counter by the register. I finally started looking them over at the beginning of December and realized I had enough fabric between the mini charms and my stash to make a really cute table runner for my mom — a gift she had been hinting about for quite a while. It turned out great — I loved, loved, loved working with the mini charm and best of all, my mom loved her gift.

  11. I love the clean, simplistic beauty of this quilt! I have purchased several mini charm packs, yet had no idea what to do with them as their tiny size intimidated me. I am excited to put a few together using this pattern! Thank you so much for making an easy one for us new quilters!

I haven’t purchased any mini-charms, but I did receive an adorable pack as a gift from a friend; it’s a lovely set of Civil war-ish RWB’s. This pattern would look AMAZING as a QOV using those up, with a lovely flag-cream background I have. I just hope I have enough of it; otherwise, off I go a’shopping!
    A+ on the pattern!
